VFX Artist (Contract)

Dreamscape Learn, a leading pioneer in the realm of immersive XR educational products, is seeking a mobile VFX Artist to join our production team. This role is ideal for a creative and technically skilled individual who can design and implement high-quality visual effects that enhance the storytelling, interactivity, and overall immersion of our virtual experiences for ARM/Snapdragon based devices.

The VFX Artist will work closely with the art, design, and engineering teams to develop stunning real-time effects optimized for performance across various platforms with a strong emphasis on mobile platforms.

This is a 1099 contract role.

Role and Responsibilities

  • VFX Design & Implementation: Create high-quality real-time particle systems, shaders, and dynamic visual effects to enhance interactive experiences targeted for ARM/Snapdragon-based hardware.
  • Optimization & Performance Tuning: Ensure that VFX assets are optimized for real-time performance while maintaining high visual fidelity across various hardware platforms with a strong emphasis on mobile devices.
  • Shader & Material Development: Utilize Shader Graph, HLSL, or custom scripting to craft advanced visual effects that integrate seamlessly into the game world.
  • Technical Art Collaboration: Work closely with lighting, animation, and engineering teams to ensure that VFX align with art direction, gameplay needs, and rendering constraints.
  • Environmental & Character Effects: Develop atmospheric effects such as smoke, fire, explosions, magical effects, weather, and interactive elements that respond dynamically to player actions.
  • Pipeline & Workflow Development: Establish and refine workflows, tools, and best practices to streamline VFX production.
  • Troubleshooting & Debugging: Identify and resolve technical issues related to VFX rendering, simulation performance, and real-time implementation.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Communication: Collaborate with artists, designers, and programmers to translate creative direction into impactful and interactive VFX.
  • 3+ years of experience in real-time VFX production for games, virtual reality, or interactive media on ARM/Snapdragon based devices.
  • Strong proficiency in Unity's VFX Graph, Particle Systems, and Shader Graph to create high-quality real-time effects.
  • Hands-on experience with mobile VR platforms (e.g., Quest) and demonstrated ability to establish efficient workflows that scale content from mobile to PC—bonus points if you've established standardized workflows in a fast-moving startup environment.
  • Deep understanding of PBR workflows, physics-based simulations, fluid dynamics, and volumetric effects.
  • Experience in animating, layering, and compositing VFX elements to create visually compelling scenes.
  • Knowledge of optimization techniques for real-time effects, ensuring performance across multiple device platforms.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Houdini, Maya, Blender, Photoshop, Substance Painter, and After Effects.
  • Familiarity with shader creation (HLSL, Shader Graph) and scripting (C# or Python) for procedural effects.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills in VFX-related technical issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating assets optimized for both high-end and low-end devices, ensuring performance and visual quality across various platforms.  
  • Experience with VR-specific VFX techniques and challenges.
  • Knowledge of ray tracing, GPU-based particle simulations, and real-time physics-based destruction effects.
  • Understanding of cinematic VFX and in-game cutscene visual effects.
  • Experience working in an EdTech or learning-focused environment.

Monthly rate: $8,500-$10,800 (DOE)
