Contract Website Content Strategist (Remote - US)

This is a contract position for independent contractors located in the United States. There is no guarantee of hours, and work will be assigned on an as-needed basis depending on project demand.

Successful candidates will be added to our pool of creative contractors. From there, we’ll reach out with project opportunities that align with your skills and availability on an as-needed basis (which may not be right away).

About our Company:

Kanopi Studios is a Design, Development & Support Agency with a fully distributed team of people who are experts in Drupal & WordPress.

Our clients have a mission; we design, build and support websites that help their mission thrive.

We’re excited to announce this opportunity to join our team as a Contract Content Strategist.

About the Job:

Kanopi Studios is seeking a Contract Website Content Strategist who specializes in creating and organizing website content to support exceptional user experiences. This role is not focused on general copywriting or SEO marketing—instead, it centers on strategic content planning, information architecture, and user-centered content design. You’ll work cross-functionally with UX designers, developers, project managers, and client stakeholders to guide content decisions that improve site usability, accessibility, and performance. From audits and sitemaps to messaging frameworks and content governance plans, you’ll shape the strategic foundation for websites that are clear, compelling, and easy to navigate.

As a Contract Website Content Strategist, you’ll divide your time between providing strategic content direction for internal teams and client stakeholders. The ideal candidate will work alongside designers, product owners and strategists to solve complex Content and UX challenges while creating delightful content experiences that empower users, build trust, and meet business objectives.

Successful candidates should be comfortable synthesizing actionable content strategies using insights obtained from user-centered research and UX best practices. You will have a demonstrated ability to clearly and confidently articulate decision-making rationale to team members and client stakeholders.

This position reports to Kanopi's Director of Strategy and Creative.

Responsibilities:

Champion User-Centered Content Strategy

  • Be a vocal advocate for user-first content practices within our internal and client teams.
  • Ensure content decisions are rooted in user research, accessibility best practices, and business goals.
  • Guide clients in understanding how content impacts navigation, usability, and conversions.

Lead and Deliver Strategic Artifacts

  • Plan, create, and present a range of deliverables including (but not limited to):
    • Content Audits & Map/Gap Analyses
    • User Journeys, Personas & User Flows
    • Keyword & SEO Research and Recommendations
    • Content Maps, Sitemaps & Navigation Structures
    • Copy Guidelines, Voice/Tone Frameworks & Light UX Copywriting
    • Deliver recommendations for structure, hierarchy, and message prioritization—not just what to say, but how and where to say it.

Facilitate Discovery & Research

  • Lead discovery workshops and stakeholder interviews.
  • Design and implement user surveys, card sorts, and usability tests.
  • Synthesize findings to uncover key insights and content opportunities.

Collaborate and Elevate

  • Partner closely with UX, design, and development teams to inform IA and interaction design through a content lens.
  • Support content implementation during design and development handoff.
  • Contribute to internal process refinement and knowledge sharing.

Contribute to Kanopi’s Brand Presence

  • Support the marketing team by contributing to thought leadership and promotional initiatives such as:
    •   Webinars, case studies, and speaking engagements
    •   Writing blog posts or participating in video content
    •   Representing Kanopi at conferences or industry events

About the Compensation:
This is a contract position. The hourly rate is commensurate with experience. The hourly rate range for this contract position is between $55/hour and $70/hour US. This is a 100% remote role, but you must live and be able to work in the US.

We are looking for candidates who have:

Must-Have Experience

  • 3+ years in a website content strategy role, ideally within an agency or client services environment.
  • Experience working with remote and/or distributed teams.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking, specifically in website content strategy, including content modelling, UX writing, and information architecture (IA) for digital experiences.

Tool Proficiency

  •  User research & testing tools (e.g., Userbrain, Optimal Workshop)
  •  Heatmap & behavior analytics (e.g., Mouseflow)
  •  Analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console)
  •  SEO & auditing platforms (e.g., SEMRush, Screaming Frog)
  •  Google Workspace and other documentation tools

Skills & Qualities

  • Excellent writing and editing skills with impeccable grammar and attention to detail.
  • Ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible content.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, especially in client-facing contexts.
  • Solid understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive content practices (e.g., WCAG).
  • Comfortable juggling multiple projects and adapting quickly to shifting priorities.
  • Collaborative mindset with a passion for mentorship, learning, and levelling up the team.

What This Role Is Not

  • This is not a general copywriting or blog-writing role.
  • This is not focused on SEO marketing funnels or ad campaigns.
  • Instead, it's a strategic role focused on how website content is structured, presented, and maintained to support great user experiences.
