Engineering Manager, Product Engineering

About us:

Miter is a leading HCM (Human Capital Management) platform designed for the $2 trillion construction industry. Miter simplifies construction workforce management, payroll, HR, and expense management, enabling contractors of all sizes to focus on growing their businesses. Miter is growing rapidly and backed by leading venture capital firms including Bessemer and Coatue.

Role Overview:

Miter has been growing rapidly over the past year and is showing no signs of slowing down in 2025. We started 2024 with a small team of engineers and have doubled that in the past 12 months with plans to double again in the coming year. We have charted out an ambitious and eagerly-awaited product roadmap and want to ship it to our customers as fast as we can. It’s time to build out our first layer of line-level managers for each of our three product teams to help us keep operating effectively as we scale. These new EMs will be responsible for the successful delivery of one of our three main product lines and will report directly into Miter’s Head of Engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a growing team of full stack engineers building out a core part of Miter’s product

  • Collaborate with Product and Design counterparts to prioritize customer requests, develop your team’s roadmap, and build the right solution for users in the construction industry.

  • Translate customer needs into sound engineering solutions that help our business grow today and scale into the future.

  • Support your direct reports with regular feedback, coaching, and performance management.

  • Partner with Recruiting to interview, sell, hire, and retain great engineering talent.

  • Operate your team with excellence by implementing the right level of process and structure to help us keep shipping fast at scale.

Qualifications:

  • Have at least 2 years of experience leading teams as an Engineering Manager, and at least a total of 5 years professional experience building software.

  • Experience recruiting, building, and scaling engineering teams through different stages of growth. Our team is small today but planning to expand rapidly over the coming years. Your job will include plenty of interviewing and selling great candidates to join us on this journey.

  • Deep technical understanding and a willingness to get your hands dirty. We don’t expect you to be a primary contributor to our codebase, but you should be comfortable reading PRs, digging deep into logs and data, reviewing design docs, and helping your team make wise technical decisions.

  • Love building products that solve real world customer problems. Our success as a business depends on our ability to understand and respond to our customers’ needs quickly, efficiently, and with high quality. There will be some hard technical challenges along the way, but if you’re primarily motivated by scaling large distributed systems or fine tuning the latest LLMs, you might be happier somewhere else. On the other hand, if you get satisfaction from seeing a customer’s face light up and celebrate the news of the latest feature your team shipped, you may fit right in at Miter.

  • Truly thrive in a fast-paced startup environment. Our team aims to keep shipping fast as the company scales which means finding the minimal set of tools and processes that help us build without creating unnecessary roadblocks to productivity. You will have a lot more autonomy and a lot less formal support than you might get in a larger company. The best candidates will be able to demonstrate that they’ve excelled in this sort of environment before and can be scrappy, drive clarity when handed ambiguous requirements, operate autonomously, and have an outsized impact as a result.
