Job Summary

The Olathe Police Department is looking for our next Community Service Officer (CSO) to join our team. As a CSO, you will have your own cases to investigate as well as being a vital resource to both our PD personnel and our community regarding police matters.

This position is a fully benefited to include KPERS retirement enrollment and 8 weeks Paid Parental Leave. This is a shift work position however does have a 4 day work week with 3 days off.

Salary Range: $49,400 - $55.097 depending on qualifications.

  • Complete reports to include but not limited to criminal, general information, traffic accidents, missing persons, stolen articles/items. Distinguish and complete legal action of investigations to include serving appropriate citations, notice to appears, and warrants. Disseminate information/reports in accordance with policies/procedures.
  • Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers. Collect, process, and photograph evidence for these reports including fingerprints, DNA, and other physical evidence.
  • Ensure accuracy of information entered/removed into NCIC and REJIS databases by routinely auditing both systems. Enter NCIC information related to the removal or entry of missing persons, wanted persons, and stolen items. Access daily over 10 databases to research/utilize information related to criminal investigations.
  • Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents including the preparation, processing, and issuance of such documents as citations, affidavits, and warrants.
  • Assist the public by providing information on City and Department programs, policies, and procedures. Identify needs requiring a uniformed presence and dispatch officers. Assist department staff by monitoring radio channels and responding/communicating when necessary.  
  • Responsible for the general security of the department’s buildings and parking lots. Provide access to appropriate individuals.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities as required.

Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license.
  • Full REJIS/NCIC access certified or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • KS CPOST or POST certified preferred Experience or Education in law enforcement Certification as a notary public is preferred.


Environmental Conditions: The Community Service Officer typically performs work in an office setting. Frequent exposure to computer screens and other electronic equipment can be expected. May be exposed to oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray.  In rare cases, the instructor may be exposed to bio-hazardous materials, waste, weapons, high value items, narcotics, explosive, animals, and bodily fluids.
