The Job

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineering Manager to drive our Data Engineering efforts.  You will lead a cross functional team of Data Engineers (a mix of direct and dotted-line reports), own, enhance and update Data Engineering processes and standards, understand company needs, and own and execute critical projects on our Data Engineering roadmap. This role sits within our Engineering department and will report directly to our Director of Data Management and Information Security. This role is remote, but there would be a preference in location to where some of this team is located Pittsburgh, Seattle, Upstate NY, Denver area.

Team Leadership and Development (33%)
  • Lead, mentor and coach a team of six Data Engineering professionals, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Establish and continuously improve Data Engineering architecture, processes and standardsProvide mentoring, coaching and leadership to matrixed (dotted-line) Data Engineers
Own and Lead Critical Data Engineering Projects (33%)
  • Own successful outcome and positive impact for critical large scale data engineering projects including project management and communicationMitigate risks and clear blockers
  • Collaborate cross functionally to drive initiativesContribute hands-on to the work as needed
Own the Data Engineering Roadmap and Strategy (33%)
  • Establish, communicate and maintain a rolling 5 Quarter roadmap for Data Engineering
  • Drive stakeholder alignment on roadmap and prioritization
  • Ensure scalable and cost effective architecture


Who You Are
  • Data Engineering Expertise: You have in-depth knowledge of Data Engineering processes and standards. 
  • Data Architecture Experience: You are comfortable with data architecture and patterns for both structured and unstructured data.
  • Leadership Abilities: You possess strong leadership skills, with the ability to provide mentoring cross-functionally.
  • Communication: You have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Value Creation: You understand business needs, users, technology, and data, and collaborate with stakeholders to design and deliver data solutions that provide business value.
  • Problem-Solving: You demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying issues and implementing effective solutions.


Experience You’ll Need
  • 5+ years experience as a Data Engineer
  • 3+ years experience as a people manager
  • Experience successfully managing large scale data engineering projects
  • Proficiency with distributed systems like Spark, Kafka and data lakes
  • Experience working with time series and IoT data
  • Experience with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure
  • Understanding of data modeling principles
  • Proficiency with object oriented programming languages such as Python
  • Comfortable with SQL


Experience That's a Plus
  • Solar Industry experience
  • Experience with Databricks
  • Experience with RDS
