Behavioral Science Resident

This opportunity falls within the Human-Center AI (HCAI) department. We are an integrated team of behavioral scientists, ML researchers, and human-computer interaction experts. At the core of our work, we aim to support people to make better decisions by leveraging the best of big data, technology, and insights about why we do what we do.



We are seeking a highly motivated Behavioral Scientist to join the Future Product Innovation department in addressing challenges at the frontier of human psychology and AI. We are looking for a candidate to support multiple projects investigating approaches for economic prediction and forecasting at multiple levels of the automotive industry. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in decision science and/or economic modeling with an interest in industrial research.



TRI’s AI Residency Program is a year-long research training program inviting those skilled in various fields to receive hands-on training with research while applying their own domain expertise. Residents will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with our team at TRI on high-risk, high-reward projects and support new methods that will impact future TRI’s research.

Responsibilities
  • Develop machine learning approaches for pricing and sales forecasting
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with specialists in multiple fields, as well as university partners, to survey and implement existing pricing and sales forecasting models
  • Collaborate with scientists in the Future Product Innovation Department to shape and craft our research program and communicate research to Toyota collaborators
  • Contribute to technology transfer of research throughout Toyota. Including participating in meetings with Toyota business groups to learn about their approaches and presenting the results of their work.
  • Work collaboratively across subject areas and functions


Qualifications
  • M.S. in Science & Engineering Management, Business, Finance, Statistics, Economics, or a related field
  • 1+ years experience and shown ability generating and evaluating economic models for forecasting
  • Skilled with time series analysis and forecasting (e.g., AR, MA, and related variants; HMMs; Bayesian structural time series models)
  • Strong data science skills with proficiency in Python
  • Proven track record of working autonomously while soliciting feedback
  • Experience with regression models, including Bayesian approaches
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a great teammate
  • Strong interest in using data to shape business decision making, especially for new products


The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $52 and $58/hour for California-based roles; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Note that TRI offers a generous benefits package (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave) and an annual cash bonus structure.
