Job Description

This is an on-call casual position responsible for responding to disasters in support of state and federal government efforts. The Physician may be deployed for periods ranging from 14 to 120 days to areas impacted by significant disasters across the United States and its territories. Compensation rates will vary depending on the specific disaster and location. 

Key responsibilities include utilizing your medical expertise to mitigate and treat injuries and illnesses, ensuring appropriate care, and making accurate disease diagnoses. You will be responsible for requesting necessary tests, scheduling follow-up visits, and referring patients to specialists as needed. The role also involves coordinating medical referrals and admissions, monitoring patient progress, and managing final dispositions. Additionally, you will be required to stabilize patients and coordinate evacuations to higher levels of care when necessary. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide urgent and emergency care within the scope and scale of normative emergency medicine practice.   
  • Coordinate medical referrals, transfers and arrange final dispositions. 
  • Stabilization of patients, coordination with the surgeon for surgical patients, Chief Medical Officer for admittance of patients or coordination of evacuation of patients to outside of location as required.   
  • Participate in meetings and medical committees as requested.   
  • Assist and participate in MASCAL drills and actual events.   
  • Telephonic on call requirements as part of a rotation, if required, supporting advanced provider activities in the emergency room.   
  • Maintain and protects the confidentiality of patient information.  
  • Maintain and improve own physician knowledge and skill competence.  
  • Provide patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients in the facility.   
  • Support the International SOS philosophy, objectives and goals, organization mission and vision.  
  • Respect and supports patient rights.  
  • Promote and practice positive customer and peer relations and cost containment for the emergency department.  
  • Assist in reviewing and revising policies and procedures.  Strong background in computer skills desired.  
  • Supports and enforces infection control policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Knowledge 

  • Familiarity with the treatment and stabilization of penetrating trauma strongly desired. 
  • Competency in performing medical procedures within the scope of Emergency Medicine practice. 
  • Ability to triage and handle multiple patients simultaneously. 
  • Ability to multi-task effectively, prioritizes and execute against multiple priorities. 
  • Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management and functional disciplines. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Strong team building and team-member skills. 
  • Proficient oral and written communication abilities in English.  
  • Flexible and willing to work in a culturally diverse environment. 

Basic Requirements/Certifications: 

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. 
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Physician; preferably in a remote/austere site.   
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS).   
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.   
  • Current Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) certification.   
  • Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification. 
  • DEA License.  

Education: 

  •  Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. 
  • Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.   

Physical Demands:  

  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.  
  • Will involve assisting in the lifting and moving of patients for litters, wheelchairs, and beds.   
  • Performing CPR.  
  • May require bending, stooping, and lifting up to 35 lbs.  
  • Exposure heat and weather conditions. 

Other Special Qualifications: 

  • US Citizen 
  • Current State License. 
  • Live near a major airport  
  • Be able to respond to site within 72 hours 
  • Clear a Child Neglect and Abuse Check and other background requirements.

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
