Pay Range

$168,780 - $214,032 Annually for the SES.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Cloud DevOps Engineer. You will join the Cloud, AI Integration, and Applications team, where you will architect, implement, and support secure and scalable cloud solutions across AWS and Azure. Your responsibilities will include managing enterprise cloud environments, enforcing security and compliance, developing service catalog offerings, and leveraging cloud-based AI services to support mission needs. Your work will play a critical role in enabling the laboratory to adopt modern technologies efficiently and securely. This position is in the Information Technology Solutions (ITS) Division within the Computing Directorate, in support of LivIT. 

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will

  • Administer and manage enterprise-wide cloud environments in AWS and Azure, including identity (e.g., IAM, Microsoft Entra ID), access, networking, resource provisioning, budgeting, and compliance. 
  • Build, maintain, and enhance service catalog items to support compliant provisioning of cloud resources such as EC2, S3, RDS, Azure VMs, Storage Accounts, and databases. 
  • Monitor and enforce cloud security and compliance using tools such as AWS Config, GuardDuty, Security Hub, Azure Policy, and Microsoft Defender for Cloud. 
  • Architect and implement scalable solutions, including server fleets, containerized applications (ECS/EKS, AKS), and event-driven serverless applications (Lambda, Azure Functions). 
  • Provide guidance and hands-on support to teams deploying cloud-based solutions, ensuring alignment with best practices in security, scalability, and cost-efficiency. 
  • Leverage AI/ML services such as Amazon Q, Bedrock, SageMaker, Azure OpenAI, and Azure Machine Learning to improve workflows and develop intelligent solutions. 
  • Manage multiple cloud environments using agile methodologies and stay current with emerging cloud technologies, AI capabilities, and security best practices. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Deep knowledge of AWS and/or Azure services, including compute, storage, networking, identity, and security components (e.g., EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, VPC, CloudWatch). 
  • Experience managing multi-cloud environments with responsibilities across access control, cost management, compliance, and identity management. 
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK, and ARM/Bicep templates. 
  • Experience architecting and managing cloud-native workloads including serverless functions, container-based services, and traditional virtualized infrastructure. 
  • Understanding of AI/ML services and ability to integrate them into operational workflows and cloud-based applications. 
  • Strong programming experience in languages such as Python, Node.js, Java, or .NET.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience implementing AI/ML services in production cloud environments and integrating them into scalable solutions. 
  • Professional certifications in AWS and/or Azure (e.g., Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, Security) and familiarity with Kion cloud governance platform.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks such as NIST, CIS Benchmarks, or FedRAMP.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. 

Pre-Employment Drug Test

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.  

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.  Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
