The Toast Card Readers team is at the heart of that experience—delivering fast, reliable, and secure payments through a growing portfolio of terminal devices and integrations.
We are looking for a seasoned EMV expert to lead the execution of card brand certifications and processor approvals, enabling our payment readers to operate globally and at scale. You will drive certifications end-to-end, working closely with engineering, QA, product, compliance, and external partners to ensure seamless EMV performance across all Toast environments. Your work enables fast, secure innovation in our card-present payment stack.

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • Own the roadmap and execution for EMV Level 3 certifications across Toast’s payment ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with engineering, QA, and product to define test plans, certification strategies, and hardware configurations.
  • Translate complex EMVCo and card brand specifications into clear, actionable certification test cases, technical documentation and requirements.
  • Lead execution of L3 test campaigns using simulation tools (UL, FIME, Galitt, BTT, CCRT, and others).
  • Troubleshoot message-level issues and debug certification failures in collaboration with host and acquiring systems.
  • Configure test environments, simulate card behaviors, and validate standard and edge-case transaction flows.
  • Stay current on EMVCo specifications, card brand updates, and global certification processes.
  • Ensure terminal configurations are aligned with certification outcomes and field deployment standards.
  • Maintain structured documentation on test cases, results, and learnings to support continuous improvement and compliance audits.
  • Drive strong collaboration across internal stakeholders and certification bodies to accelerate time-to-certification and launch.

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • 5+ years of experience in payments or fintech with a focus on EMV certifications, card-present transaction systems, or terminal software.
  • Deep understanding of EMV transaction flows, APDU command structures, and Level 2/3 certification practices.
  • Proficiency with ISO 8583 message formats and end-to-end authorization flows.
  • Experience with L3 test execution using simulation and certification tools (e.g., UL, FIME, Galitt, BTT, CCRT).
  • Familiarity with mobile wallet implementations and tokenized payment flows (e.g., Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay).
  • Working knowledge of multiple terminal environments, including POS, mPOS, unattended kiosks, fuel terminals, ATMs, and transit systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to dive deep into certification logs and resolve technical issues.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent certifications and deadlines.
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively across teams in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.
  • Bonus: Experience scripting or automating test case execution and environment setup.
