Staff Web Engineer, Digital Accessibility

This means that we should be consciously designing and building our product to support people with disabilities. The Digital Accessibility team works closely with Product Engineering, QA, Design, and Product Marketing teams to develop solutions that enable more inclusive user experiences. As part of the larger UI Foundation team that contributes to Airbnb’s design system and UI tooling, we are involved in all stages of the product development lifecycle, from conceptualization to launch. The Difference You Will Make:

This is a unique opportunity to meaningfully elevate the digital accessibility of Airbnb on Web for millions of guests and hosts. To scale accessibility coding practices, you will build technical solutions that range from tooling to foundational capabilities. While most of your time will involve hands-on development, you will also contribute to educational resources and mentoring other Web engineers on accessibility best practices.

A Typical Day: 

  • Lead defining and building tooling and process for accessible product development
  • Lead accessibility training and support for engineers
  • Integrate and support automated accessibility testing and tooling
  • Integrate accessibility best practices for the whole company, including in our Design System, by collaborating with engineers and cross functional partners: designers, product and program managers
  • Guide accessibility improvement projects spanning multiple teams
  • Work with leadership on promoting and solving accessibility at every stage of the project development lifecycle
  • Help address accessibility bugs and enable other teams to conduct remediation initiatives
  • Participate in code reviews


Your Expertise:

  • 9+ years of industry experience
  • Fluency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related web technologies
  • Experience with modern JavaScript libraries and tooling (e.g. React, Typescript)
  • Experience writing code that meets accessibility standards and best practices such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Knowledge on practical usage of WAI-ARIA (and when not to leverage it)
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies, such as VoiceOver, JAWS or NVDA
  • Passion for building and helping others build accessible UIs and experiences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals as relevant to building web apps and experiences
  • Awareness of cross-browser compatibility issues and client-side performance considerations
  • Demonstrated design and UX sensibilities
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Passionate about healthy team culture and collaboration

Your Location:

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. How We'll Take Care of You:

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
