As a Software Engineering Manager at Boeing, you will lead and support a diverse team of software development engineers. This is a unique opportunity to manage full lifecycle software development for the most sophisticated military and commercial platforms in the world. The successful candidate will lead a software engineering team responsible for software and test development for a Vertical Lift platform. Our teams develop mission, vehicle, and flight control software, as well as modeling, simulation, testing, and analysis, for the V-22 Osprey and H-47 Chinook aircraft. We also support software projects throughout The Boeing Company. Responsibilities include integrating team activities with the other Integrated Product Teams (IPT) and across numerous programs; managing successful projects, day-to-day work assignments, staffing, personnel development, skills management, and team training. The lifecycle of the team’s products spans all activities from proposal development through aircraft fielding and resolution of field issues.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining overall tools and processes, supporting ongoing process improvements, and coordinating software customer interface. The manager also provides oversight of technical issues/solutions, build plans, project status briefings, proposal inputs, and administration issues.
This position requires project, people, and technical leadership; customer engagement; participation in design reviews; conducting employee development and employee reviews; as well as cost account management of team budgets and schedules. The position will require management of resources and priorities across multiple software development and IR&D projects.
Position Responsibilities:
• Lead software engineers through the full lifecycle of software development, from modeling and simulation to testing and analysis
• Recruit, hire, mentor, and manage teams of software developers, fostering their career growth and building a strong team culture based on inclusion, innovation, and respect
• Demonstrate a commitment to the mission and motivate the team to achieve common objectives through effective teamwork
• Collaborate with customers and other leaders to clearly define expectations and deliver exceptional solutions
• Drive innovation by looking beyond current practices and utilizing creative thinking to discover new opportunities and solutions
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to inform and implement the company's technology strategy, with a special focus on execution and timely delivery
• Manage employees performing engineering and technical activities in the area of Software Engineering
• Develop and execute project and process plans, implement policies and procedures, and set operational goals
• Acquire resources for projects and processes, provide technical management of suppliers, and lead process improvements
• Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports
• Provide oversight and approval of technical approaches, products and processes
• Lead and support Proposals, Requests for Information/Proposal, including both Technical and Non-Technical writing and estimating
• Manage projects including baselining, execution and control account management
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):
• 5+ years of experience in the software development full lifecycle
• 3+ years of experience leading or managing engineering teams
• 3+ years of experience facilitating/leading and executing project plans
• 3+ years of experience developing project execution plans, schedules and budgets
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
• Experience attracting, developing, and challenging world class developers with a passion to drive excellence in software development.
• Broad technical experience in programming languages, development environments, operating systems, validation, and verification, and in emerging technology and engineering standards.
• Experience using automation techniques to increase the pace and flexibility to the enterprise.
• Experience informing and implementing a company’s technology strategy, with special focus on execution and ensuring timely delivery.
• Familiarity with DO-178 software certification methodology.
• Previous experience with US DOD software development is a plus.
• Previous experience in a multidisciplinary engineering organization working with cross functional teams.
• Experience in software product development or information technology. Understanding how to create software products in a platform ecosystem is ideal.
• Experience in project execution and earned value management techniques.
