City Research Scientist, Level IV

Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Professional Standards Division seeks a qualified candidate for City Research Scientist, Level IV who will:
-Lead and manage data science projects focused on analyzing large and complex datasets to support risk assessment and mitigation strategies for the Police Department Plan, design, and coordinate research evaluations to assess various risks, trends, and predictive factors related to personnel risk.
-Develop and implement advanced statistical models and algorithms to identify patterns, forecast risks, and recommend actionable insights.
-Present data findings to stakeholders through clear, concise, and visually impactful reports, ensuring key insights are easily understood by non-technical audiences. Collaborate with policy makers, law enforcement agencies, and other internal teams to inform decisions and strategies with data driven insights.
-Supervise and mentor a team of data scientists, analysts, research associates, and uniformed members of the service; providing guidance and support in both technical and professional development.
-Stay current with criminal justice policy, emerging technologies, and best practices in data science, risk analysis, and criminal justice research.

HOURS/ SHIFT:
Monday-Friday, hours varied (between 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM)


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

In compliance with federal Law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

Qualifications

1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
