Sr. Software Development Engineer - Real-Time and Big Data Web Dev

Overview

In this position, you will use your front-end web development experiences to develop new features in contributing to the enhancement of ArcGIS Velocity, ArcGIS GeoEvent Server and other next-generation real-time and big data enterprise and cloud offerings. Additionally, you will utilize your experiences and development skills to provide creative, logical, and practical solutions that yield innovative software product capabilities.

This team supports some of Esri’s real-time products, including ArcGIS Velocity and ArcGIS GeoEvent Server. As a software engineer, you will design and develop software used by organizations across diverse markets and industries. You will be part of a talented cross-functional team of dynamic and passionate engineers who deliver capabilities that enable our customers to make a difference in communities around the world. In this role, you will design and develop the software used by a large community of GIS professionals to power the operations of their organizations.

The Professional Services division is the consulting and implementation arm of Esri. We break ground in new markets, push the technology envelope and ultimately deliver transformational solutions to high profile clients worldwide. The Professional Services organization is comprised of nearly 1,000 talented business and technical professionals who strive every day to help our users be successful.

Responsibilities

  • Use JavaScript, Typescript, and React to develop front-end applications that follow industry-standard design patterns, development methodologies, and deployment models
  • Develop software used by people who are not software developers. Ensure the exceptional software you create influences them to be exceptional professionals in their respective fields
  • Prototype, design, develop, and deliver complete software features and products that can scale, are fault tolerant, and handle concurrent workloads
  • Collaborate with other developers throughout the development process, those on your immediate team and other those on other teams that build supporting software
  • Participate and be engaged in the Scrum software development process, attending planning meetings, retrospectives, and iteration reviews
  • Evolve your language skills by staying current with complementary programming languages, development methodologies, user interface design techniques, and database tools
  • Ensure software meets accessibility, internationalization, and localization requirements

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional front-end web development experience
  • Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, TypeScript, etc. and user experience frameworks such as React, AngularJS, JQuery, Dojo, or something similar
  • Working knowledge and experience developing with relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, or Oracle
  • Object oriented design experience and skills
  • Strong understanding of Java, TypeScript, and JavaScript design patterns
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of data formats including JSON, XML, and delimited text
  • Experience consuming REST services from a JavaScript web application
  • Experience working with large codebases
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Have a passion for quality, are detail oriented, and have a desire to improve products
  • Proven ability to work in a self-led or team environment
  • Bachelor's or master’s in computer science or STEM related field

Recommended Qualifications

  • Experience with accessibility and internationalization
  • Experience with technologies such as Apache Spark, Kafka, OpenSearch, or distributed big databases
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Java build systems, i.e. maven
  • Knowledge of Docker containers and orchestrators such as Kubernetes
  • Good understanding of cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS and Azure) and services such as Amazon S3, EC2 and Azure services such as Blob Service, etc. 
  • Understanding of agile software development practices
  • Experience using GIS or mapping related software development
  • Master’s in computer science or STEM related field

Base salary is one component of our total rewards strategy. Compensation decisions and the base range for this role take into account many factors including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

A reasonable estimate of the base salary range is
$118,976$197,600 USD
