Pay Range:

$140,700 - $178,392 Annually for the SES.2 level
$168,780 - $214,032 Annually for the SES.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for a Network Engineer with expertise supporting diverse enterprise network architectures, including implementation and operations. You will be responsible for contributing to the design and architecture of LLNL’s various enterprise networks, including installing, configuring, and maintaining network hardware and software.  This position is in the Enterprise Infrastructure Services Division (EIS) within the Computing Directorate, supporting the Field Intelligence Element (FIE.)

These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Collaborate on the design and architecture of campus, and datacenter networks utilizing advanced network technologies.
  • Perform complex network administration and troubleshooting tasks to configure, operate, and maintain network equipment including switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and other equipment.
  • Collaborate with Cyber Security Team to implement comprehensive network security architectures, policies, and monitoring.
  • Interact with vendors to evaluate network products and services.
  • Thrive in a fast paced and challenging environment, with multiple competing priorities, while managing to maintain sound judgement and excellent customer service.
  • Perform occasional work outside normal business hours in order to provide support for network operations and maintenance activities.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry network architectures and best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the SES.3 Level

  • Design and deliver advanced, customized networks, in alignment with customer requirements and enterprise network strategies.
  • Ability to work independently to configure and effectively utilize network management and monitoring tools.
  • Diagnose, resolve, and document highly complex network problems.

Qualifications

 

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
  • Extensive experience in network system design, configuration, implementation, documentation, and operations.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of and experience with network routing and switching, including OSPF, IS-IS, or BGP, and Spanning-tree.
  • Experience maintaining Cisco Call Manager or Call Manager Express environments.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of and experience in firewall configuration and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of edge port security features, such as 802.1x.
  • Experience with COMSEC equipment and procedures.
  • Proficient interpersonal and verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to work independently and interact with customers and team members.

Additional Qualifications at the SES.3 Level

  • Significant experience developing advanced architecture solutions.
  • Highly advanced troubleshooting skills and experience solving problems by analyzing protocol interactions collected in packet traces.
  • Experience training and mentoring team members in network engineering and architecture.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional Certifications (CCNP), or comparable industry certification from another vendor.
  • Experience with network overlay technologies such as GRE, IPSec, MPLS, and VXLA.

Wireless and Medical Devices

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.  

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.  Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
