Your challenges as a Product Designer

Learn: Our core customers are niche users with many years of academic training. You need to continuously develop an understanding of what is friction and what is delight for them, and how that relates to the mental models that govern their professional habits.

Scale: What incremental change could we make quickly to improve usability? Where and how should we standardize a design system component not only for better quality but to help our engineering teams ship faster? How can we introduce an existing feature to a new market with minimal localization cost?

Innovate: What is the minimum design that fits the core hypothesis when we expand to a new JTBD? How can we use design to unblock difficult engineering iterations? How can design be used to create more accuracy through seamless user feedback?

Promote: The best features sell themselves, but more often than not, an initial boost is required. What content and assets should we use for product marketing? What should be the language and tone of a brand new feature? How can we package these to enhance the storytelling of our commercial team members?

Validate: Shipping fast isn’t enough. What would you introduce as quantitative and qualitative trackers to validate the user reaction of your improvements? Success or failure, you need to use that to build your conviction and regularly share that back with the wider team.

Core skills

  • You have strong interaction and UX design skills, and can apply many modern methodologies to help yourself and your team.
  • You are proficient with using modern design tools (e.g., Figma) for creating specs as well as storytelling.
  • You are devoted to validating a hypothesis quickly with user flows and prototypes at the appropriate fidelity to avoid sunk cost.
  • You can be relied on to create user research briefs and/or expand on the thinking of the stakeholder, Product Manager, and engineering lead.
  • You obsess over collecting feedback and can dissect large qualitative data from multiple sources (NPS, Social, Rating, etc.).
  • You have a solid understanding of design systems and component-based design and how to use them to resolve user pain as well as help software engineering ship faster.

Depth of expertise

  • 3-5 years of experience in a Product Design role at an internet economy, digital-first, or digital agency/consultancy, that resulted in shipping real software products (still running today).
  • Worked cross-functionally with product managers, engineers, and researchers or with clients, 3rd-party consultants, and business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ownership and independence in a role where you had to spearhead gathering of user insights, both quantitative and qualitative, and translate them into design decisions with clear trade-offs.
  • (Preferred) Experience in launching a product in one local market and then successfully scaling it to multiple countries with different language/culture.
  • (Preferred) Experience in building SAAS software or working in an early-state startup.

Language Requirement

  • Proficiency in English and has used it at a working level in another role at a business level.
  • Experience in adjusting design for Eastern language localization preferred.

IMPORTANT:

For interview consideration, please include your portfolio showcasing real-world shipped products and design rationale.
