Job Description

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

These Mental Health Specialist II (MHS2) work in our Acute Behavioral Services (ABS) programs. ABS sites are highly specialized programs in which we serve individuals with intensive, interfering behavioral and mental health needs.  The persons receiving these services have many of the following characteristics: previously placed in a highly restricted facility, high incidence of crisis situations, high behaviors or anti-social issues, multiple hospitalizations/commitments/ institutional stays, history of law enforcement involvement due to behaviors, and multiple failed placements. These group homes have been significantly modified to eliminate safety concerns. Consistency and routine are key factors in the proven success of these programs.  Because of the complex/high level behaviors, MHS2's are provided training for manual restraints and will experience mental, emotional, and physical manipulation from the person we support. Staff may be exposed to severe verbal aggression that may include disparaging remarks, racial slurs and swearing.  ABS programs utilize a person-centered approach to creating a program that focuses on supporting a person to reach their goals while still considering the safety of the individual, staff, and the community.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

These are caregiver positions with an emphasis on mental health and behavior management support. Past experience in direct support professional roles as well as behavior technician would be similar in responsibilities.

  • Provide Hands-On Care: Assist individuals with daily activities like personal care, meal prep, and transportation, all while fostering independence.
  • Support Mental Health & Behavioral Management: Utilize your skills to help individuals overcome behavioral challenges, offering compassionate, person-centered care.
  • Create a Safe & Welcoming Environment: Maintain a clean, safe space that ensures comfort and support while helping individuals reach their personal goals.
  • Mentor & Guide: Provide supervision, positive reinforcement, and guidance to help individuals achieve their aspirations.

Qualifications

What You Bring to the Table:

  • At least 3 years of experience working with individuals who have challenging behaviors, such as physical or verbal aggression, property destruction, or self-injury in a caregiving / direct support or relatable role
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and 21 years or older for some sites
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Passion for Helping Others: Experience with mental health conditions (e.g., bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety) or individuals with disabilities
  • Physical stamina to stay on your feet, walk, stand, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Basic computer skills for tracking progress and documentation.
  • If you’re passionate about making a difference and have experience as a Behavioral Specialist, Behavioral Technician, or Mental Health Specialist, we want to hear from you!
