Job Profile Summary

Under the supervision and guidance of the Chief Medical Officer, Psychiatry Residents at the PGY 1 level participate in structured programs to develop skills in the assigned patient care competencies. The resident will learn the specialty of Psychiatry by active participation in patient care and educational activities. The degree of independent decision making will increase commensurate with the level of training and individual competence of the resident. Focus is on community health care, in a primary care clinic setting, treating medically underserved patients.

General Job Description

Under the supervision and guidance of the Chief Medical Officer, Psychiatry Residents at the PGY 1 level participate in structured programs to develop skills in the assigned patient care competencies. The resident will learn the specialty of Psychiatry by active participation in patient care and educational activities. The degree of independent decision making will increase commensurate with the level of training and individual competence of the resident. Focus is on community health care, in a primary care clinic setting, treating medically underserved patients.

Job Roles

• Assist and perform outpatient procedures, with the administration of general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, conscious sedation, and pain management procedures.

• Attends all required meetings; actively contributes and participates in meetings. Participation in the annual residency review conference is required.

• Completes assigned residency curriculum, including orientation, family medicine, inpatient psychiatry, neurology, and internal medicine.

• Continually improves upon communication skills, documentation skills, case presentation skills, interpersonal skills, and listening skills. Demonstrate the ability to establish effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families. Communicates with patients and staff, verbally and otherwise, in a manner that exhibits good professional judgment and good listening skills and is appropriate for the professional setting. Demonstrates the organizational skills required to care for four to ten (4-10) or more outpatient cases per half day (depending on year level of training).

• Demonstrate timely, consistent and reliable follow-up on patient care issues, such as laboratory results, patient telephone calls, and other requests. • Input and retrieve computer data through a keyboard and read a computer screen.

• Manage multiple patient care duties simultaneously.

• Move through the clinical and hospital sites to address routine and emergent patient care needs.

• Participate in, and satisfactorily complete, all required rotations, including longitudinal rotations and clinic rotations. • Perform a complete history and perform a physical examination including pelvic exam.

• Perform additional Program- and specialty-specific patient care activities as required for completion of the Program for Residents at the applicable GME level. If required, said additional Program and specialty-specific patient care activities are described in the Residency Program Policy Manual.

• Perform an electrocardiogram, venipuncture, dressing change, IM & SC injections, intravenous catheter, suture removal and other procedures not requiring specific consent of the patient.

• Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

• Perform documentation procedures, such as dictation, progress notes and discharge summaries, in a timely manner.

• Prepares small group case studies/didactic lectures and participates in medical readiness exercises.

• Present well-organized case presentations to other physicians or supervisors and function as a dependable member of the health care delivery team.

• Provide health education to patients and obtain consents for procedures in which the Resident will participate.

• Provides complete patient care in clinic setting under direct supervision of attending physician. Performs procedures under direct, specific supervision of attending physician. Patient care includes performing thorough history and physical; synthesizing data into a problem list and diagnosis; formulating diagnostic and therapeutic plan with supervision; performing basic clinical procedures; demonstrating caring and respectful behavior.

• Read charts and monitors.

• Residents at the GME level 1 must be able to take call for the rotational services that require inpatient admission and work stretches of up to sixteen (16) hours.

• Specific job functions include:

• Use sterile techniques and universal precautions

• Wear protective clothing and respiratory equipment for care of patients with communicable diseases and/or immunocompromised patients.

• Write orders for therapeutic agents on the FHCSD Formulary for patients.

• Write orders, including diagnostic procedures or consultations requested by members of the Physician Faculty.

Education/Certifications/Licenses/Registrations

• Ability and means to travel as needed in a timely manner within San Diego County. DRIVER REQUIREMENTS: Requires an active Class C California driver's license, proof of liability insurance at $100,000, on vehicle used. No more than 2 points in past 12 months; No suspensions in last 2 years for moving violations; No DUI, reckless or felony Driving within 5 years. No license revocation in 7 years.

• Acceptance in the Psychiatry Residency Program through the National Residency Matching Program.

• Current American Heart Association healthcare provider CPR (BLS), or Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, or Advance Resuscitation Training required within 90 days of employment.

• Eligibility for selection as a resident must conform to the guidelines of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) general requirements. Resident candidates must be graduates of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or approved schools of osteopathy, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or Canada, or hold a current valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), along with a status letter from the Medical Board of California, authorizing the start of postgraduate training in the State of California.

• Basic computer literacy ability to comply with department needs and expectations (i.e., electronic medical record documentation, obtaining background information and reports on patients, following up on appts, etc.).

• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to access relevant clinical information.

• Demonstrated interpersonal and customer service skills.

• Demonstrated knowledge of clinic-based ambulatory patient care.

• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.

If you are hired at Family Health Centers of San Diego, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, jurisdictional requirements, skills, education, and/or experience. In addition to these factors – we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is what we reasonably expect to pay for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.
