The expected hiring range for this position is

$87,300.00-$133,900.00.

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

About the Role: 

Fermilab is America’s outstanding laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world. Fermilab’s Accelerator Directorate has a strong and exciting Accelerator research program with major commitments to a diverse range of current and future accelerator projects.

The Proton Source Department within the Beams Division of the Accelerator Directorate is seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate for the position of Associate Scientist. The successful candidate will conduct research focused on particle accelerators, primarily the 8 GeV Booster synchrotron, and address challenges related to preparing the Booster for high-intensity operation in the PIP-II era.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing the current performance of the Booster through beam simulations and beam experiments,
  • Identifying and addressing issues related to high-intensity operations during the PIP-II era which include contributing to advancements in injection, transition crossing, and beam extraction for PIP-II-era operation of the Booster,
  • Developing mitigation techniques and strategies to enhance the Booster performance.

The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the lab’s long-term accelerator complex improvement initiatives, such as the ACE-MIRT program.

This is a tenure track position for a period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter. 


Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Ph.D. in particle physics, nuclear physics, or relevant subjects by the time of the appointment with a minimum of three years of post-doctoral research experience at High Energy Physics lab. Should have carried out independent research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on technical issues of Accelerator components. 
  • Creative and independent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability/willing to perform accelerator physics calculations and simulations. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Work collaboratively with accelerator physics and engineering staff.
  • Abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office unless otherwise advised.
