Job Title:                     Green Cities Coordinator (Term Limited)

Job Classification:       Project Coordinator 1

Job Summary:

This two-year grant-funded position will be part of a team of conservation professionals in a growing, county-wide, natural resource management special purpose district. The individual holding this position recruits and trains park stewards and leads natural restoration events in the cities of SeaTac and Burien and develops curriculum for and leads after school programming for students in the Highline School District. With work in the office and the field, this position involves multi-faceted duties that require collaboration and problem-solving and an elevated level of motivation, versatility, and independence. This position has a strong relationship with South King County communities, is responsive to public needs, easily and meaningfully engages with others, possesses strong written and verbal communication skills, actively encourages diversity, equity, and belonging, and collaborates across teams of staff, community partners, interns, and volunteers to achieve the goals and objectives of Cities’ priorities and needs.

 

This position is term-limited and ends June 2027.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Apply knowledge of urban forestry and restoration ecology principles, practices, and strategies to implementing forest stewardship projects in urban and suburban landscape settings
  • Lead effective community engagement and communication regarding City regulations and urban forestry best practices with internal and external partners, working closely with community leaders, community-based organizations, and other institutions
  • Build relationships and work cooperatively with City of Burien and City of SeaTac staff, partner organizations, community groups, individuals, businesses, schools, and clubs in South King County
  • Communicate among interdepartmental City staff about projects and manage deadlines and progress across teams to ensure that projects are delivered on time
  • Develop and teach place-based environmental leadership and restoration curriculum for after-school programming with both middle- and high-school students
  • Schedule, plan, promote, and execute logistics for equitable, inclusive volunteer restoration events
  • Recruit, register, and coordinate training and recognition of program participants, including administering stipends
  • Provide leadership and direction to volunteers, students, and program participants
  • Track volunteer involvement using CEDAR and Microsoft Excel, maintain all program records, and report metrics quarterly and annually

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop collaborative, sustainable, accountable, and respectful relationships with leaders, community members, and groups, including but not limited to communities of color, immigrant, and refugee communities. 
  • Demonstrated ability leading restoration projects and educational programming with volunteers and students from varying backgrounds.
  • Work weekend days and weekday evenings up to 3 times per month as needed to support volunteer, education, outreach, and partner events. 
  • Application of appropriate safety practices in the field and in the office and ability to perform physical work and walk over uneven terrain in all weather conditions  
  • Ability to work full-time schedule with overtime if needed with prior approval 
  • Adept with office equipment and software including computers, network servers, Internet, e-mail, MS Office, Excel spreadsheets, Teams, and Zoom. 
  • Less than 5 percent of the job duties may be combined with other duties as required by the district. 

Education and Experience:

  • 2-4 years+ experience and/or associate degree, or combination thereof, in natural resources, environmental education, environmental science, environmental restoration, or a closely related field
    Demonstrated ability to lead volunteer groups
  • Knowledge of Puget Sound watersheds, the range of land use practices, and the natural resource management issues and challenges facing the region
  • Familiarity with Pacific Northwest ecology and native plant species
  • Familiarity with environmental justice principles

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge, understanding, or ability to learn city, county, and state government planning and decision-making processes
  • Proficient use of software and apps for creating promotional videos and engagement tools
  • Working knowledge of target language: Spanish, Vietnamese, Amharic, or Tigrinya

Physical Requirements:

  • May work in the field for up to 6-8 hours per day – away from the office.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to drive in and throughout King County using a district vehicle 
  • A valid Washington State Driver License is required when driving district vehicles.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times. 

 

Full-Time, Non-Exempt Position:

This position will start at the hiring Grade of 24, Step 1, currently at $64,403.95 annually. After passing a successful 6-month probation, candidates will automatically move to step 2 within the salary band.

Benefits: The District offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes paid vacation and holidays, medical and dental, a nominal life insurance policy with the option to increase coverage at employee’s expense, support for trainings, and participation in the State of Washington Retirement System (PERS).

Work Schedule:

Full Time, 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday 7 AM – 3:30 PM work schedule. Some weekend and evening work is occasionally required.
