Pay Range

$271,320 - $345,840

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

We’re looking for a Deputy Chief Technology Officer. You will be responsible for advancing enterprise technology strategies across Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) while supporting the Livermore Information Technology (LivIT) program. This role involves driving new technology adoption, developing strategies, and ensuring seamless integration of innovative solutions to enhance LLNL’s mission. You will report to the LivIT Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and work closely with the Strategic Architecture and Projects Office (SAPO) to execute on transformational IT initiatives.

You will:

  • Serve as a key advisor to the LivIT CTO, contributing to strategic direction, enterprise architecture, and technology roadmaps.
  • Oversee proof-of-concept (PoC) initiatives, pilot programs, and experimental deployments to evaluate new technologies and determine their viability for broader adoption.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including DOE/NNSA partners, to drive enterprise-wide IT transformation initiatives.
  • Engage and build strategic relationships with technology vendors to evaluate and integrate cutting-edge solutions that align with LLNL’s mission.
  • Provide expertise in cybersecurity best practices, ensuring new technologies align with national security and compliance requirements.
  • Develop and execute detailed implementation plans for transitioning from legacy systems to modern, scalable platforms.
  • Represent LLNL at cross-laboratory and federal IT forums, sharing best practices and learning from peer institutions to enhance IT strategy and execution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Management Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and extensive relevant technical experience.
  • Extensive experience working within a laboratory or federal environment, supporting DOE/NNSA mission stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated expertise in researching, designing, and deploying enterprise IT solutions within federally regulated environments.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with major cloud service providers, enterprise IT architectures, and emerging technologies.
  • Extensive experience leading cross-functional team in support of IT modernization initiatives.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills to independently evaluate, recommend, and implement innovative IT solutions.
  • Expert ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to senior leadership, sponsors, and a broad range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing strategic technology roadmaps, architectural blueprints, and execution plans for large-scale IT initiatives.
  • Expertise in cultivating successful relationships with external stakeholders and fostering partnerships to drive innovation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Management Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Expert-level experience in managing and operationally supporting enterprise IT solutions across a broad technology stack.
  • Knowledge of DOE/NNSA IT funding, planning, and approval processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise data strategy, governance, and analytics frameworks.
  • Deep understanding of the LivIT application portfolio, its architectural foundations, and LLNL’s cybersecurity framework.

    This is a Career Indefinite position, open to Lab employees and external candidates.

    Security Clearance

    This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. 

    Pre-Employment Drug Test

    External applicant(s) selected for this position must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

    Wireless and Medical Devices

    Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.  

    If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.  Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
