Optical Engineer II

The Optical Engineer will develop a variety of optical systems for visual and interferometric imaging products as well as laser beam delivery systems. You will work as part of a larger design team to develop systems that are high performance and cost effective. The candidate is expected to be proficient with optical design and simulation tools (Zemax, Code V, OSLO, etc) so that they can design systems that are properly toleranced and manufacturable. The Optical Engineer should be able to clearly communicate the design constraints and trade-offs off the optical system to all stakeholders.

Although the location of the position is in Morganville, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Work collaboratively on projects to understand the optical needs of our fiber processing and inspection systems: imaging optics, illumination, camera selection and image system layout.
  • Proficient with interferometric analysis and how to use interferometric systems to measure surfaces.
  • Optical system design in Code V, OSLO or Zemax. Zemax is our preferred design platform.
  • Provide detailed documentation on design, experimentation, prototyping, and verification testing.
  • Experienced with the use of DFM and DFA principles.  Assist production, R&D and design with optical system testing and troubleshooting tasks.
  • Prepare optical test data and system analysis data for optics and non-optics engineers.
  • Participate in engineering and general design reviews.
  • Develop vendors that can consistently supply quality optical components.
  • Keep current with newest applications, products, and manufacturing techniques within the industry. Share, discuss, and collaborate while looking for opportunities to implement.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, the position is also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments. The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Physical Activities: Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job related equipment and tools.

Experience:

  • 7+ years’ experience designing optical systems with hands on experience working in the lab environment

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, or Physics

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise in imaging design principles and techniques to achieve precision imaging and/or optical interferometric measurements.
  • Experience with CAD, prefer SolidWorks or Inventor.
  • Demonstrated technical background. Hands on experience with precision optics and mechanics including alignment, measurement, and testing.
  • Proficiency with Zemax as the primary optical design tool.
