Scientific Writer, Neurosurgery

Position Summary

The Scientific/Grant Writer is responsible for developing , editing, and submitting high-quality grant proposals, research manuscripts, and technical reports that effectively communicate research findings and secure funding for projects, in collaboration with departmental faculty, residents and students. This role requires a strong background in scientific writing, grant application processes, and the ability to translate complex scientific information into clear and compelling narratives.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Interpret scientific and biomedical information; identify and prioritize critical content; translate information for scientific, medical, and lay audiences.
  2. Coordinates input from a multi-disciplinary team while meeting tight deadlines.
  3. Plan and execute systematic, scientific literature search, review, and report processes for multiple projects.
  4. Draft, edit, and review scientific manuscripts with accuracy, clarity, and compliance with publication standards in collaboration with faculty, residents, and medical students.
  5. Prepare figures and illustrations for publications and presentations. Assist with the design, development, and selection of scientific illustrations, tables, and figures. Draft and edit scientific PowerPoint presentations. 
  6. Lead the submission process for scientific journals, from submitting a manuscript and revisions to final publication; Educate residents and students on the submission process.
  7. Research and identify funding opportunities from government agencies, foundations, and private organizations.
  8. Draft and edit grant proposals, ensuring alignment with funding agency guidelines and organizational goals in collaboration with faculty, residents and medical students, including budgets, objectives, and supporting documentation.
  9. Maintain detailed records of grant applications, submissions, funding cycles, and reporting deadlines.
  10. Review completed proposal applications for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with institutional and funding agency requirements.
  11. Assist in the preparation of progress reports and other post-award documentation.
  12. Provide training and guidance on grant writing best practices to faculty and research staff.
  13. Stay updated on current funding trends, policies, and submission processes for federal, state, and private funding entities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Public Health, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in grant writing, research administration, or proposal development in higher education, non-profit, or for-profit sectors.
  • Strong understanding of grant management systems and electronic submission portals (e.g., Grants.gov, NSF Fastlane, NIH eRA Commons, Proposal Central, Cayuse, Huron, InfoEd, Kuali).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work witha wide array of individuals, operate effectively in a team setting, and educate learners in scientific and grant writing and submission

Preferred Qualifications

  • CRA (Certified Research Administrator) certification.
  • Experience with federal, state, and university grant programs and their submission processes.
  • Familiarity with compliance regulations related to research funding and grant administration.
  • Prior experience in budget development and financial reporting for grants.
