Forest Technician, SEASONAL

As the Northern California Forestry Technician for Forest Carbon Works, a nature-based solutions company committed to developing high-quality voluntary carbon offset projects, this individual should be highly motivated and independent with a strong background in forestry and natural resources. The Forestry Intern will conduct inventories with the Forest Carbon Works’ platform, an innovative service which helps private forest landowners access the carbon market. The Forestry Technician’s primary responsibilities will be to complete carbon inventories using our smartphone inventory device (cruising) and assist with processing collected data. 


The Forestry Technician will represent Forest Carbon Works and its parent, Chestnut Carbon in his/her region, reporting to the Senior Western Forester. This position is ideal for someone looking for a flexible work schedule that has experience working in forest ecosystems in Northern California and is looking for an opportunity to work with a paradigm-shifting carbon company.  The ideal candidate will be based in Humboldt or Mendocino counties. This role requires regular travel and overnight stays at inventory sites.


Chestnut was founded and backed by Kimmeridge, a US-based private equity firm with offices in New York and Denver. 



Responsibilities
  • Travel independently to inventory sites throughout Northern California and potentially parts of Oregon. Occasional correspondence with landowners may be necessary. 
  • Complete forest inventories following cruise and plot definition parameters using Forest Carbon Works’ inventory platform. Process inventory data collected using Forest Carbon Works’ programs including photo digitization and species identification.
  • Assist with QA/QC inventory work for carbon verifications and inventory software. This will include traditional forest mensuration such as taking DBH measurements, tree heights, tree cores, and decay stage classifications. 
  • Regularly communicate with staff via phone or email with occasional in-person correspondence with Forest Carbon Works’ Senior Western Forester and Western Forester, reporting regularly about job duties and assignments. 
  • Frequent and sometimes extended, overnight travel to property sites within Northern California is required. 
  • Processing data collected using Forest Carbon Works’ programs including photo digitization and species identification.


  • Undergraduate degree/current student in forestry or related field required. 
  • Minimum of 1-3 years regional experience in forest inventory field work. 
  • Experience with traditional forest inventory techniques. 
  • Tree species identification experience in California forest types. 
  • Comfortable working in brush, undergrowth, and thickly forested areas, frequently alone, in remote areas, and in various weather conditions.  
  • Willing and able to camp overnight for 2-4 days (possess proper gear).
  • Experience using a compass and/or have experience with orienteering.
  • Hiking boots, camping gear, reflective/safety clothing (hunting) are required.
  • Proficient in use of smartphone technology (and experience troubleshooting issues), digital cameras, GPS devices, Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Ability to travel regionally (frequently). 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 
  • Passionate about sustainability.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.   
  • Authorized to work in the United States. 


$20 - $25 an hour
The base salary range for this position is expected to be between $20-$25 per hour, subject to the chosen candidate’s experience, skills, certifications and qualifications. This position will require approximately 32-45 hours of work per week. There will be fuel reimbursement based on the standard IRS mileage rate and meal reimbursements during overnight stays. Occasional lodging will be pre-arranged for on an as-needed basis.
