The Department Advocate's Office (D.A.O.) mission is to ensure and maintain the integrity of the disciplinary process for all members of the New York City Police Department. The D.A.O. is seeking recent Law School graduates interested in a career in law enforcement/public interest field. This entry level position includes legal training in the work of D.A.O. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-Receives legal training in Agency specialty legal work.
-Assists in preparing legal arguments and documents, such as memoranda, motions, pleadings, briefs, subpoenas, etc., in connection with Agency proceedings before various courts.
-Assists in pre-trial preparation, reviewing investigative reports interviewing prospective witnesses, conferring with other attorneys, consulting with specialists, etc.
-Researches legal cases, opinions and decisions and abstracts salient points and references.
-Analyzes legal documents and assists in preparing and reviewing Agency contracts.
-Reviews legal documents in connection with the acquisition of property.
-Assists in the review and interpretation of existing laws, rules and regulations, and in the preparation of legislative proposals applicable to the Agency.
