Senior Engineering Technologist OR Lead Engineering Technologist

The selected candidate can sit in any Operations Center Location within the Florida Central Zones.

Position Summary

The highest level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification is the Lead Technologist. This job is not part of a standard progression. The job requires a business case justification substantiating the necessity of a Lead role in conjunction with the enterprise Professional titling guidelines. Lead Engineering Technologists provide technical expertise to solve complex problems and utilize the leadership skills necessary to oversee the training and development of the hierarchy. Incumbents engage in strategic oversight and management of work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently. This position will report to the Manager for Distribution Design for the Residential Development Team for Florida.

This position focuses and engages on some of the largest, most impactful residential development projects in the Duke Energy service area. The primary focus of the role is managing processes and preparing work orders to achieve success for capital improvement residential projects which includes off-site improvements, unit infrastructure, and streetlights. Maintaining relationships with land developers and home builders through timely execution of their project work plans is a must. This position is accountable for all aspects of residential project work and work order preparation to energize the communities we serve and empower the success of our customers.

This position collaborates closely with Resource Optimization Planners and Schedulers, Operations Construction, and Operations Contractor Partners. This person needs to be an outstanding communicator, project manager, and customer advocate that applies technical expertise to solve more complex problems and management skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Incumbents are expected to have a deeper technical skill and the ability to work independently.

This position is to perform the role of customer communication, planning, engineering, coordination, and administration of Residential Development Project Team underground subdivision work, and other work as assigned. This includes small subdivisions as well as complex mixed-use land developments, while learning to manage large scale planned developments for single family, multifamily, and mixed-use projects. This engineering role is a customer facing role and provides exceptional customer service through each phase of assigned projects throughout the process.

The selected candidate will be required to meet with internal and external customers to determine project needs, assess job site conditions, and manage the project to develop the most efficient and economical solution to meet the project demands and timeline. Collaboration with other Duke Energy work groups and contractor partners is required to maintain a high level of service consistency.

  • Ability to perform distribution designs

  • Maintains accurate records and files

  • Communicates and negotiates effectively for mutually positive outcomes

  • Provides subject matter technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in area of expertise

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities

  • Perform field investigation and designs using standardized design tools and applications for RDT projects

  • Produce large volumes of high-quality work that adheres to design and construction expectations and enables the work order to be scheduled, constructed, and completed on time

  • Perform job site coordination activities to facilitate needs of customers and construction crews

  • Manage multiple projects and customers simultaneously in order to assure timely, successful completion of projects resulting in high levels of customer satisfaction and company/departmental/individual goal achievement

  • Directs work performed by others to ensure it is on time and meets design and construction requirements

  • Adapt quickly to changes in projects scope and timeline

  • Conducts engineering and related studies - Incumbents are expected to engage in frequent working group phone calls and face-to-face meetings to coordinate and implement changes as a result of fleet and recognize industry best practices

  • Endeavor to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance

  • Be available for and perform major and minor storm restoration duties including extended working hours, field work and/or specific storm assignments

  • Advance four key priorities - Event Free Operation, Engaged and Empowered Workforce, Customer Satisfaction, and Growth

  • Independently reviews and prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches as well as craft recommendations for necessary actions

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files

  • Coaches and mentors other Engineering Technologists and Engineers.
     

Required/Basic Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below. 

Senior Engineering Technologist

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) AND six (6)+ years minimum required related experience

  • Associates degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) AND eight (8)+ years minimum required related experience

  • In lieu of degree(s) and experience listed above, High School/GED AND 12+ years minimum required related experience

Lead Engineering Technologist

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) AND nine (9)+ years minimum required related experience

  • Associates degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) AND 11+ years minimum required related experience

  • In lieu of degree(s) and experience listed above, High School/GED and 15+ years minimum required related experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology

  • Increasingly proficient in applying principles of project management

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Electric utility distribution design experience

  • Maximo software experience

  • BOUD software experience

  • Effective time management skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

    Mobility Classification

    • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

    • 3 days in office; flexible

    • The selected candidate can sit in any Operations Center Location within the Florida Central Zones.
