Innovation Project Manager

The Role

You will be responsible for overseeing multiple internal projects, with a focus on process optimization, documentation and effective resource management. These internal projects will span our company focuses in AI, Web3 and commerce, involving building prototypes, POC’s, and reference architectures.

The resourcing will primarily come from our engineers who are between client projects and are available for short sprints, therefore effective resource management and planning will be important.

In addition to managing active projects, the role will also involve identifying and coordinating with external funding sources such as public grants and programs by making sure relevant supporting information is accurate and up-to-date.

There may also be occasions when short projects are created to strengthen a strategic partnership in addition to research and development objectives.

This includes:

  • Structuring and documenting innovation activities.

    • Creating relevant templates and processes for comprehensive documentation of methodologies, hypotheses and outcomes.

    • Creating structured project plans with clear objectives, estimated timelines and resourcing needs.

  • Optimizing resource utilization.

    • Coordinating with engineering managers to understand when resources will be available and how to best utilize them.

    • Crafting an efficient on-boarding and off-boarding plans for engineers to be productive even in short commitments to the project.

  • Coordinating with partners and vendors for innovation funding programs.

    • Working with vendors to create submission packages for innovation incentive or funding programs.

      • Depending on the program, this may also involve collecting and compiling information from our client projects in addition to these innovation projects.

    • Representing Lazer and our projects when undergoing external review processes and engaging with external partners or vendors.

  • Overseeing regular engineering activities during projects in an agile format including planning sprints, running stand-ups and facilitating reviews.

  • Regularly reporting to internal stakeholders on project progress and funding application status.

Requirements

You would be guiding projects with the best engineers in product development, requiring strong organization skills, technical knowledge and attention to detail.

  • Strong experience as a project manager, product manager or lead engineer in startups or consulting contexts.

    • Must have past experience with projects in at least one of AI, Web3 or Commerce.

  • Proven experience managing multiple complex projects at once with shifting resources available.

  • Strong familiarity with project documentation, processes, tooling and reporting best practices.

  • Sufficient technical knowledge to work effectively with engineers, identify genuine innovation and effective prioritization.

  • Familiarity with submission requirements for SR&ED or similar innovation incentive programs.

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders and partners as well as build rapport and trust with engineers.

  • Experience working in a consulting context.

  • Experience working as an engineer building products.
