OHSU has three missions: healing, teaching, and discovery. In the School of Nursing, these focus to optimize health, prepare nurse leaders, and transform health care. Infusing these is a fourth: to become a trauma-informed and truly anti-racist institution. The School of Nursing has made the same commitment. We, along with all of OHSU, are striving to become a place where every member can be safe, be at their best, and do their best work. With support from OHSU leadership and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and using a trauma-informed approach, we are transforming our culture, policies, admissions, hiring, and more. 

 

The Faculty in Residence (FIR) collaborates with the Street Nursing Team to as a direct access point to care and holistic nursing care services to the unhoused community. Using harm reduction and trauma-informed approaches, this person works alongside students to provide outreach, assessments, support care coordination, and telehealth. Additionally, this person provides instruction to students on the complexities of homelessness and effective evidence-based approaches to help improve the health of the population. The FIR develops relationships, establishes, and sustains community networks, and is dedicated to co-creating opportunities for improved community and population health with formal and informal community leaders and residents.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Liaison between Academia and Community: Supports students in clinical learning activities consistent with course curricula, objectives, and client goals.
  • Builds relationships through on-going face-to-face interactions with PEH, community agencies, healthcare providers, and formal/informal community leaders.
  • Engages in community activities that demonstrate OHSU’s commitment to “giving back” or “paying it forward” through education and trainings.
  • Collaborates with partners to provide continuity of client care throughout the year, including during times when school is not in session.
  • Promotes student safety.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students during experiential learning activities using the street classroom approach.
  • Implement clinical curriculum for undergraduate nursing students in alignment with the OHSU SoN undergraduate nursing education competencies for care of PEH:
  • Provide respectful, compassionate, person-centered care for people experiencing homelessness (PEH).
  • Evaluate clients for social determinants of health needs, including housing status and related aspects of safety, access to food, social support and other relevant domains.
  • Collaborate with client and appropriate Interprofessional community members to optimize health in PEH.
  • Advocate for improved health for PEH.
  • Collaborate with students, clinical faculty and community partners to identify, develop and when mutually feasible, sustain population health and leadership projects. Health projects are supported by nursing coursework in N410, N412 and potentially N424/N425.
  • Provide client care that focuses on Health Equity, Social Determinants of Health, Harm Reduction, Trauma and Violence Care, and Client-Centered Care to improve health and wellness of individuals within a community.
  • Supervises and facilitates students’ provision of client care.
  • Participate in grant team
  • Collaborates with the grant team and partners to implement grant activities and achieve grant goals.
  • Collaborate with Project Manager and partners to disseminate grant-related scholarship/research.
  • Other Activities:  The appointee provides services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

    Required Qualifications

    Education:

    • Instructor: MSN or equivalent
    • Assistant Professor: MSN/DNP or equivalent

    Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: (Current licensure & certifications could be required depending on position and academic program.)

    • Oregon RN license
    • BLS
    • Other: Board Certified PMHNP

    Experience: (Experience dependent on academic program type and rank of position.) 

    • 3 years of clinical practice experience required;☒ Teaching experience at the BSN level preferred

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Interest and experience with teaching and advising students.
    • Has knowledge and experience with local community.
    • Knowledge experience and passion with caring for PEH.
    • APRN supervising PMHNP students will be Board-certified.
