About the Department

The Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology at the University of Chicago is renowned for advancing the field of radiation oncology through pioneering new clinical approaches, the use of cutting-edge technologies, and impactful translational research. Our distinguished and diverse team of physicians, scientists, and physicists collaboratively provide exceptional patient care while driving scientific discoveries that shape the future of cancer treatment.

The Halpern Lab at The University of Chicago’s Biological Sciences Division, Department of Radiation Oncology, is an NIH Center for EPR imaging in vivo physiology that develops improved strategies for radiation treatment of cancer based on physiologic imaging. We use cutting-edge electron paramagnetic resonance imaging to acquire oxygen maps for targeted radiation therapy. We also apply the power of proteomics to study the interaction of radiation with live tissues.
This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary

The Research Technician entails management and preparation of experimental materials, participation in the experimental processes, preparation of subject animals, and execution of our experimental protocols along with various support duties including data management and analysis. As a prototyping and wetwork laboratory, the nature of the job is dynamic, demanding meticulous attention to the details of experimental science.

We are looking for a self-motivated, research-focused individual to collaborate with interdisciplinary team and assist in data entry, ensuring accuracy and adherence to research methodologies under the guidance of researcher.

Responsibilities

  • Management and preparation for experiments.

  • Scheduled preparation of experimental tumor models in mice.

  • Selection, surveillance and treatment of irradiated animals

  • Cell culture and maintenance of cancer model strains.

  • Preparation of mice for experimental procedure.

  • Administration and maintenance of anesthesia in mice during experimental procedures.

  • Operation of our oxygen EPR imagers.

  • Reconstruction, registration and analysis of imaging data (MRI, CT, EPR).

  • Operation of an XRad225 irradiator.

  • Organization and maintenance of experimental notes and data.

  • Moving new experimental protocols through regulatory and administrative hurdles.

  • Ensuring the laboratory remains within regulatory compliance.

  • Physical upkeep of laboratory equipment and spaces.

  • Provides technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

  • May assist recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
