Head of Engineering (VPE)

About the Role

We're looking for a Head of Engineering to lead our engineering team and drive our technical vision in generative AI. 

As a hands-on builder in an early-stage company, you will lead our technology strategy, set a high bar for innovation and technical rigor, and create an engineering culture that is ambitious, collaborative, accountable, and deeply customer-focused. You will ensure that our technology is not only scalable and robust but also sets new standards in the fields of AI, 3D and web. Finally, you are exceptionally articulate and able to showcase our technical achievements to industry peers, recruits, customers and investors. You start with a solid foundation of 5-6 exceptional engineers, working as a distributed team, to which you will recruit new talent through your network. 

Location: Preference for SF/Bay Area, CA. Open to remote candidates in North America & Western EU.

Responsibilities

  • Set Technical Strategy: Understand trends in generative AI, LLMs and software, aligning advancements in LLMs, generative models, and creative tools with company goals.

  • Lead by Example: Write and review code that sets a high bar for technical innovation and problem-solving, as part of how you lead. Use AI as part of how we build.

  • Build and Grow the Team: Have a strong network of low-ego, high-performance talent. Foster a collaborative, accountable and ambitious team culture.

  • Shape the Product Journey: Guide the technical roadmap and manage the team so stay abreast of the newest developments in generative AI research.

  • Drive Optimization and Scalability: Refine our AI and 3D stack to optimize performance, reduce reliance on third-party tools, and support scalable, high-performance workflows.

  • Harness Insights and Feedback: Build analytics and feedback systems to combine the right balance of high-performance and innovation.

  • Deliver Results: Break complex projects into actionable milestones, driving transformative product development for faster, more imaginative creative workflows.

  • Hands-on Leadership with Modern Tech Stack: Strong technical skills with recent, hands-on experience in core tools like foundational models, RAG frameworks, knowledge graphs, frontend frameworks like three.js, Vercel, and open standards like WebGL/WebGPU. 

  • 3D Interactive: You understand the intricacies of building 3D and interactive experiences and can set the technical foundation for these capabilities.

  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: You are comfortable in fast-paced, early-stage environments and have a referenceable track record of things you have personally helped ship. 

  • Networked and Respected: You have a proven developer network, and know how to attract talented engineers who can push technical boundaries in 3D, AI, and generative experiences.

  • User-Obsessed: You have sufficient discerning taste in polished products and a commitment to delivering an exceptional end-user experience.

  • Clean codebase. Build a flexible codebase and structure that allows us to innovate quickly without sacrificing quality and reliability.

  • Successful Launches: From early prototypes to full-scale products, make sure we are delivering on time and setting the stage for customer success.
