Our mission
Climate change is causing deep uncertainty at all levels of society, with climate volatility reducing the security of all land-based assets and posing a multi-level security threat for the functioning of enterprises, societies, and governments.
Mitiga is a spinoff of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which hosts MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe.
Mitiga's mission is firmly rooted in employing cutting-edge science and technology to mitigate the multifaceted risks posed by climate-driven perils. Our approach spans a spectrum of temporal scales, from real-time and annual forecasts to projections spanning the next century. This comprehensive perspective on risk, coupled with our capacity to transfer risks to capital markets via catastrophe bonds, positions us to significantly contribute to enhanced climate mitigation, resilience, and equity.
And we need you.
Who you are
We are looking for someone to work on the flood models powering EarthScan, our platform that provides essential information on climate risks for reporting and investment purposes. These coastal, riverine and pluvial flood models are crucial to helping our customers understand the potential impact of climate change on their assets. As such we are looking for a generalist able to work on our holistic flood modelling suite, who is happy to face new challenges and learn on the job, and work with the team to enhance all our flood models. Don't hesitate to apply if you only have experience in one type of flood modelling, but are keen for the challenge of learning more!
As part of our continued growth, we are looking to expand and refine our flooding models and flood risk analyses, taking them to the next level in quality.
Your impact
You are someone who can translate global flood modelling into the climate risk setting. You consider the details of both the physical and human flood processes, all the while acknowledging the uncertainty of climate predictions. You understand how to communicate flood risk to clients, both on its own and in relation to other climate perils. In this role, you will:
Take on technical ownership of Mitiga’s flood models, collaborating with the product and science teams to define the development roadmap for our flooding products.
Lead work to further validate our in-house flood models.
Lead the exploration and evaluation of 3rd party datasets that could complement our current offering, including possible integration in to our current technology.
Work with our Strategy team on appropriate ways to incorporate flood risk into our ratings and impact calculations.
Be the ‘go-to’ expert for questions about flooding both within the company and with our customers.
Requirements:
We are seeking a Flood Risk Modeller with a strong technical background to join our dynamic team.
Minimum 4+ years of experience in flood modelling, either Academic or Industry: At least 2 years of industry experience applying flood modelling and risk assessment methodologies is favoured.
(Essential) Technical Expertise: Possess a deep understanding of flood modelling principles.
(Essential) Climate Change Impact: Demonstrate an understanding of how climate change factors can influence flood risk.
(Desired) Technical Expertise: Experience of in-depth flood risk assessments.
Proven Delivery: Experience of successfully delivering flood risk analyses to clients, ensuring clear insights.
Hands-on Approach: Actively participate in the modelling process, contributing alongside our close-knit team. Skills in Python (or similar) and GIS are highly desired.
Data-Driven Approach: Possess a strong analytical mind and utilize data effectively to inform decision-making.
Effective Communication: Have excellent stakeholder communication skills, enabling you to translate complex technical information into clear and concise messaging for diverse audiences.
Problem-Solving Skills: Demonstrate the ability to navigate ambiguous project requirements and develop clear solutions that drive the project forward.
Diversity
A recent study shows that one in every 10 tech workers in Spain are women. Only 8% of all contracts in 2019 with people with disabilities were in technology and science. Meanwhile, 30% of LGTBIQ people in Spain do not come out in the workplace for fear of discrimination.
This is neither the world we want to live in nor the workplace we’re building.
Mitiga is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
In fact, we strongly encourage applicants from minority groups to apply.
Our offer
Our vision is to be the place where a diverse mix of talented people want to come, to stay and do their best work. Some of our benefits, like unlimited personal time or flexible working arrangements, help work adjust to your life – and not the other way around. You can work from home or come twice a week to our office in the heart of Barcelona. Dogs and other furry friends are welcome!
Our compressed work schedule allows you to work half a day on Fridays during the year (so you can start the weekend early). During the summer, it also allows you to work 4 days a week, so you spend time with your loved ones (or work on your tan). Shadow our leadership and participate in our structured feedback and mentorship programs. If you grow, we grow.
Don't see a fitting open role? Fill out this form and we will get back to you if an opportunity matching your profile comes up!
If an employer mentions a salary or salary range on their job, we display it as an "Employer Estimate". If a job has no salary data, Rise displays an estimate if available.
