Job Details:
The Associate Director manages staff, oversees programs, and supports the strategic direction of the Clements Center for National Security. This role involves program leadership, faculty engagement, and mentorship of students and professionals pursuing careers in national security, diplomacy, and related fields. This position is ideal for a seasoned leader with both academic expertise and national security experience, capable of shaping programs, mentoring students, and driving strategic initiatives at the Clements Center.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.
Center Leadership & Operations
Supervise and manage staff and resources to ensure effective execution of events, student programs, academic initiatives, and policy efforts
Oversee budget planning, financial projections, and administrative operations
Maintain strong working relationships with University Business Services and Central HR
Optimize staff responsibilities and hiring decisions to align with Center priorities
Teaching & Academic Engagement
Following the first year, teach one course per academic year (up to two by mutual agreement) in diplomacy, war, or intelligence studies
Provide a minimum of 15 days of on-site faculty supervision for Asia May Term, London May Term, or Summer Beyond Borders programs
Occasionally participate in public speaking engagements related to the Center’s mission
Program Oversight & Student Mentorship
Actively manage student and military programs, including efforts to expand partnerships with U.S. military institutions and service academies
Strengthen relationships with military fellows, ROTC programs, and Army PhD recruitment efforts
Mentor students and early-career professionals in academic and public service pathways
Additional Responsibilities
Represent the Deputy Executive Director or Executive Director as needed
Support development efforts as needed
Ph.D.
Experience teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level in war, diplomacy, or intelligence
Strong mentorship track record in career development and professional guidance
Minimum 12 years of experience in national security, foreign affairs, or active military service
Proven success managing government or business operations, large staffs, and complex budgets
Commitment to travel (30–45 days per year, primarily May–August)
Ph.D. in History, Political Science, Security Studies, or a closely related field
Record of academic publication in relevant subject areas
Experience working in or closely with the U.S. Department of State, Department of Defense, or intelligence community
Experience in U.S. government operations in war zones
This position is based in Austin, TX and is required to work on campus.
Summer travel (minimum of 30–45 days) required
Occasional evening and weekend commitments
May work around standard office conditions.
Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
$160,000 +negotiable depending upon qualifications
