JobType: full-time

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Leader (Backend) to join our dynamic team in Bangalore. In this role, you will lead and manage a team of backend Individual Contributors (ICs), driving technical excellence, optimizing SaaS spend, and fostering a culture of innovation. You will play a key role in scaling the backend engineering function while ensuring that all initiatives align with the company’s strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Development

  • Build and Scale the Backend Engineering Team
    • Recruit, onboard, and mentor backend engineers.
    • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and professional growth.
  • People Management
    • Lead and support a team of backend ICs.
    • Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
  • Mentorship & Talent Development
    • Identify and nurture talent within the team.
    • Encourage skill development and career progression.

Managing & Optimizing Spend

  • SaaS Spend Management
    • Oversee and optimize spend on SaaS platforms and services such as OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS, and Snowflake.
    • Evaluate and implement cost-effective solutions without compromising quality.
  • Vendor Management
    • Manage relationships with SaaS vendors.
    • Negotiate contracts and ensure alignment with business needs and budgets.
  • Cost Optimization Strategies
    • Identify opportunities to reduce costs through consolidation or alternative solutions.
    • Implement monitoring and reporting mechanisms to track SaaS usage and expenses.

Scaling Team Culture

  • Foster a culture aligned with core values and operating principles.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive environment with open communication.
  • Mediate conflicts effectively, ensuring strong team dynamics and smooth project execution.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Work closely with Product, Design, and Frontend teams to align backend engineering efforts with company objectives.

    • Present technical concepts in a clear and accessible manner.

Strategic Planning

  • Identify & Address Gaps
    • Assess backend team capabilities and pinpoint areas for improvement.

    • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies.

About You

Experience:

  • 8+ years in software engineering roles, with at least 3 years in leadership positions.
  • Proven experience in building and scaling backend engineering teams, ideally in a startup environment.
  • Experience with early-stage startups (Seed/Series A/B) or previous founder/co-founder experience is highly desirable.

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong background in backend development and system architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with modern backend technologies and frameworks.

Leadership Skills:

  • Ability to lead, mentor, and inspire backend engineers.
  • Experience managing backend ICs and driving technical excellence.

SaaS Spend Optimization:

  • Experience in managing and optimizing SaaS platform expenses.
