Lab Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY

The Hematology Lab Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the hematology laboratory, ensuring high standards of quality, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements. This role involves supervising a team of laboratory professionals, managing workflows, troubleshooting technical issues, and maintaining an environment that fosters professional development and safety. The supervisor will also collaborate with medical staff to ensure the timely and accurate processing of hematological tests.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES


Supervision & Leadership:

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of hematology laboratory technicians and technologists.
  • Monitor and evaluate staff performance, providing feedback and conducting regular performance appraisals.
  • Ensure adequate training and development opportunities for staff to maintain proficiency in laboratory techniques and instrumentation.
  • Promote a collaborative and supportive work environment.

 Operational Management:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the hematology laboratory, ensuring smooth workflows and adherence to turnaround time expectations.
  • Manage inventory and ordering of laboratory supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels and timely replenishment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to hematology testing equipment and procedures.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments in compliance with manufacturer guidelines and regulatory standards.

Quality Assurance & Compliance:

  • Implement and maintain quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) programs to ensure accurate, reliable, and precise test results.
  • Ensure laboratory practices comply with applicable regulatory agencies, including CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and HIPAA.
  • Review and analyze test results for accuracy and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Lead investigations and root cause analysis for any deviations or non-conformances, ensuring corrective actions are taken.

Test Analysis & Reporting:

  • Ensure proper preparation, processing, and analysis of hematology specimens, including blood smears, complete blood counts (CBCs), reticulocyte counts, and coagulation tests.
  • Oversee the timely and accurate generation of test results and assist in complex cases as needed.
  • Collaborate with pathologists and other clinical staff to interpret and communicate lab results.

Safety & Regulatory Adherence:

  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Monitor adherence to infection control and safety procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff and patients.
  • Participate in laboratory inspections and audits to ensure full compliance with federal and state regulations.

This employee will have financial and budgetary oversight of the Hematology department under the direct supervision of the General Manager.

Supervision

Indicate the typical number of Colleagues managed.  Include direct & indirect reports, matrix responsibility and or additional resources (i.e. contingent workers), as applicable.

This employee will directly manage up to 10 colleagues.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in a healthcare/laboratory environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of hematology testing techniques, equipment, and best practices.
  • 5+ years of experience in reference laboratories with 2 years of leadership experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, internet, office/fax machines
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) from an accredited organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT). Advanced certifications in Hematology preferred.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to maintain high standards of accuracy.
  • Experience with multiple Laboratory Information Systems.

PHYSICAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Note - the physical conditions in which work will be performed, if applicable to the position.  Examples: Lifting, sitting, standing, walking, ability to travel, drive, unusual attendance requirements, weekend work or travel requirements, etc.

  • Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended period.
  • Must be able to bend and crouch to reach supplies and lift over 30 pounds.
  • Must possess ability to communicate accurate information using both written and verbal skills, to personnel in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet turnaround time
  • Ability to work in a lab environment with chemicals, reagents, and biological specimens.
