We are seeking an experienced and motivated Laser Engineering Manager / Principal R&D Engineer to drive the development of high-energy diode-pumped solid-state laser (DPSSL) systems within the laser development division. In this leadership role, you will oversee a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists, guiding the design, development, and optimization of next-generation laser systems for high-power applications, including inertial fusion energy (IFE) and other advanced photonic technologies.
This role would be responsible for the development of kilojoule-class, diode-pumped laser systems with high wall-plug efficiency and exceptionally high average power to drive commercial fusion power plants. As part of this effort, you will be at the forefront of developing state-of-the-art laser technologies, pushing the boundaries of performance. Your contributions will be integral to advancing the capabilities of high-energy laser systems for inertial fusion energy (IFE).
Lead and mentor a team of scientists and engineers in the design, modelling, simulation, and development of high-energy DPSS laser systems.
Drive the conceptualization, architecture, and optimization of laser amplifier chains, ensuring high efficiency, and performance.
Collaborate with optical, mechanical, and electrical engineers to ensure seamless system integration.
Define and execute experimental validation strategies, including prototype development and performance characterization.
Work closely with industry partners, research institutions, and stakeholders to advance cutting-edge laser technologies.
Ensure project milestones, budgets, and deliverables align with organizational goals.
Maintain awareness of emerging trends in high-energy laser technology and drive innovation within the team.
PhD or MS in Physics, Optical Engineering, Laser Science, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in high-power DPSS laser system design and development.
Strong background in laser physics, nonlinear optics, optical modeling, and high-energy laser amplification.
Expertise in laser system simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, COMSOL, LASCAD, or in-house Multiphysics codes).
Experience leading R&D teams in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Hands-on experience with laser system prototyping, testing, and diagnostics.
Strong project management skills and the ability to drive projects from concept to completion.
Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a track record of managing technical teams effectively.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills in English are necessary to deliver presentations, prepare written reports, explain technical information, and provide advice to project sponsors and external collaborators.
Team player with high levels of emotional intelligence.
Proactive personality, you like to take responsibility and take the initiative even in challenging situations.
Strong hands-on mentality, you enjoy helping shape the success in a dynamic, innovative company.
Preferred: Strong experience in diode-pumped laser technology for high-average-power applications.
Preferred: Background in inertial fusion energy (IFE) laser systems.
