Tissue Recovery Specialist II (FT)

Overview

At LiveOnNY we save lives, provide comfort, and strengthen legacies through organ, eye and tissue donation for the 13 million New Yorkers we serve.

 

The Tissue Recovery Specialist:Participates as a member of the Tissue Recovery Team at hospital locations and other recovery facilities within the LiveOnNY service area. Complies with LiveOnNY policies and procedures, FDA regulations, AATB standards, OSHA standards, and the standards and procedures of affiliated tissue banks when participating in tissue recovery activities. Incorporates surgical sterile technique during tissue recovery procedures. Supports and fosters the mission of the organization and its commitment to organ and tissue donation.

Responsibilities

Follows LiveOnNY policies and procedures, FDA regulations, AATB standards, OSHA standards, and AORN standards for sterile technique while preparing for and performing recoveries.

 

Assists the Team Leader with the completion of the physical assessment of the donor’s body.

 

Draws blood for serology testing.

 

Preps and drapes the donor’s body for sterile surgical recovery.

 

Maintains aseptic technique throughout the recovery.

 

Performs sterile surgical tissue recovery of musculoskeletal and cardiovascular tissue under the direction of the Team Leader.

 

Packages and labels recovered cardiovascular tissue according to established protocols.

 

Restores the donor’s body after tissue recovery in accordance with the Funeral Director’s requests, when known, to facilitate embalming procedures. This includes the

positioning of prosthetic devices and the suturing of all incisions.

 

Together with other team members, cleans the operating room/recovery facility after tissue recovery.

 

Coaches and trains other team members on surgical tissue recovery procedures, as assigned.

 

Carries a pager during all scheduled on-call hours for recoveries. Responds to pages within 15 minutes.

 

Arrives at the hospital on time for the scheduled recovery.

 

May function as TRS-I (Back table), when assigned, and as necessary due to staffing patterns or team member arrival times.

Qualifications

MD, RN, Surgical Technician, EMT or equivalent and/or one to two years related experience and/or training preferred.

Good knowledge of human anatomy/function and basic medical terminology is necessary.

Knowledge of surgical aseptic technique and demonstrated ability to work in a sterile operating room setting required.

Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills essential.

CTBS certification (Certified Tissue Bank Specialist) preferred.
