A Day in the Life

Mission of the Role

As a Product Engineer II at Medtronic, you will be responsible for accelerating the launch of new products and ensuring seamless transfer into high-volume production. You will play an essential role in driving design transfer, mitigating risks, and leading the qualification, validation, and compliance processes. Your technical expertise will influence product manufacturability, quality standards, and manufacturing optimization across our global sites.

Overall Responsibility:

  • Support New Product Development Projects:

    • Act as the technical expert and single point of contact for all manufacturing process and technical-related questions within the project.
    • Collaborate with project managers and stakeholders to ensure smooth product development and timely launches.
    • Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders at various organizational levels.
  • Lead Technical Work Package Execution:

    • Product Design & Manufacturability:
      • Drive product design changes and improvements in manufacturability.
      • Initiate and manage product specifications reviews and acceptance.
      • Implement and drive product/process traceability strategies.
      • Coordinate defect analysis activities from initial identification to market release.
    • Qualification & Validation Activities:
      • Lead and review qualification and validation activities for product development.
      • Approve components validation and ensure readiness for production.
      • Drive the development and implementation of innovative, cost-effective manufacturing solutions.
      • Address and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Leadership & Collaboration:

    • Provide technical guidance to team members and junior engineers.
    • Challenge and influence manufacturing processes and technical choices to ensure product quality and efficiency.
    • Lead efforts to improve product quality by applying design for reliability and manufacturability practices (DRM).
    • Ensure the application of established quality standards across the product development lifecycle.
  • Design for Reliability & Manufacturability (DRM):

    • Lead the development and execution of the DRM plan for product transfer activities.
    • Contribute to the creation and execution of First Time Quality (FTQ) plans.
    • Ensure alignment with design and manufacturing best practices to optimize product reliability.
  • Continuous Improvement & Standardization:

    • Collaborate across multiple global sites (Singapore, Switzerland, US) to contribute to standardization efforts.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, utilizing Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing principles.
    • Work with Operational Excellence (OPEX) team to optimize the manufacturing process and line layout.
  • Safety & Compliance:

    • Champion a safe work environment and ensure all EHS risks and incidents are reported.
    • Enforce adherence to Health and Safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in product engineering, particularly in high-volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with product design transfer, qualification/validation activities, and manufacturability improvements.
  • Strong understanding of product specifications, design compliance, and pFMEA risk assessments.
  • Familiarity with design for reliability and manufacturability practices (DRM).
  • Excellent problem-solving and issue resolution capabilities.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and work with global sites.
  • Strong communication skills and experience interacting with various organizational levels.

Additional Skills & Attributes

  • Familiarity with Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, and Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  • Experience in change control and new product introduction (NPI) processes.
  • Ability to lead technical workshops and events.
  • Proficiency in project management and time management.
  • Fluency in English is required; additional languages are a plus.

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CAREER STREAM: An individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D, systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.

Contacts others to share information, status, needs and issues in order to inform, gain input, and support decision-making.

Leadership and Talent Management: May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and / or employee in Support Career Stream.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires practical knowledge and demonstrated competence within job area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.
Requires a Baccalaureate degree (or for degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree which satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)( 4)(iii)(A) and minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience.
