You will support all aspects of sales and use tax, including compliance, audits, and research. You will ensure the accurate filing of returns and assist with journal entries and monthly general ledger account reconciliations. Additionally, you will help research sales tax issues related to audits and compliance and help implement system and process improvements. You will report to the Financial Accounting Manager.You will be in a hybrid position, which includes regular attendance to the Norfolk, VA office 3 days per week with the flexibility to work remotely for the remaining 2 days per week.Responsibilities• Prepare and file state sales and use tax and value added tax (VAT) returns in multiple state, local and foreign jurisdictions and ensure payment of associated tax liabilities.• Prepare and perform all monthly tax reconciliations of sales and use tax transaction data, review accounting transactions to support liabilities for compliance reporting.• Review tax returns prepared by other accountants and approve necessary tax payments.• Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments and communicate their effects to management and the tax team.• Respond to requests for tax information by internal customers and taxing authorities and resolve compliance issues with taxing authorities.• Assess current procedures and create recommendations for process improvements and operational efficiencies.• Complete other special tax projects.Basic Qualifications• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or a related field.• 3+ years of experience working within a corporation with sales and use tax compliance obligations required.Preferred Qualifications• 2+ years of experience in Microsoft Office software, specifically Word and Excel.• 1+ years of experience in a Financial ERP system such as Workday.• Research skills and ability to remain current on tax laws, rules and regulations and their applicability to specific situations.The annual base pay range for this role is between $78,000 and $90,000.The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve.
