Job Description Summary

The Digital Lab is an integrated unit of both BC Children s Hospital and the UBC Faculty of Medicine s Department of Pediatrics with its key function being a catalyst for technology innovation in pediatric healthcare. Our primary goal is to improve the lives of the children and families of British Columbia through interdisciplinary research and development, and leveraging novel and emerging technologies.

This position is both an operational leader for the engineering function within the Digital Lab, as well as a senior technical specialist; this includes distinct responsibility for design, installation, analysis, configuration, and integration of engineering-related prototyping and related projects within the unit.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Head of the Digital Lab, and works closely with other Leads as well as medical staff and administrators across BC Children s Hospital, UBC, and allied stakeholders. The incumbent interacts with other UBC departments and units as well as relevant off campus organizations (e.g. various equipment suppliers, etc.).

Work Performed

-Leads and advises on key decisions concerning the planning and organization of related projects.
-Researches, selects, sources and evaluates technical solutions for the Digital Lab.
-Manages the operation and maintenance of equipment used for prototyping and clinical operations.
-Responsible for ensuring compliance with appropriate safety and regulatory standards, and providing relevant training to all equipment users.
-Designs prototypes and engineering products to meet specialized project requirements, working closely with clinical and administrative partners across a diverse stakeholder network.
-Manages all aspects of the major tools and equipment (related to the engineering team and 3D Technology Program) in the Digital Lab, ensuring that everything is in working order at all times.
-Provides comprehensive technical support related to engineering products and operations.
-Manages the design, installation, analysis, configuration and integration of associated equipment.
-Participates in all safety related initiatives, including but not limited to acting as a member of the safety team, conducting lab safety tours, and participating in the OHS initiatives as required.
-Collaborating and engaging with stakeholders to achieve program strategic goals and objectives.
-Operational oversight for biomedical engineering operations within the Digital Lab, including distinct program management responsibilities for the Three-Dimensional (3D) Clinical Technology Program; these responsibilities include financial and inventory management, supervisory responsibilities for assigned engineering staff, and internal/external stakeholder communications.
-Develops technical workflows for engineering and digital manufacturing within the Digital Lab.
-Supervises and provides mentorship to all Junior Engineering Staff, Technicians, and Students.
-Supports those using the Maker Space on highly technical and experimental projects.
-Participates in regular training on new tools and equipment and expand knowledge and skill.
-Performs other related duties, as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position is an operational leader and senior technical specialists within the Digital Lab. The incumbent will be expected to make well-reasoned decisions after careful consideration of the needs of the program and key stakeholders.

Overall project stability and sustainability are crucial, and will be the primary consideration in all aspects of program decision-making. Failure technical and operational decision-making may lead to the loss of stakeholder support and failure of the project. Impact of decisions would affect the integrity of the Digital Lab, adherence to regulatory procedures and potentially risk privacy and confidentiality of patients, research participants; which may contribute to additional operating costs, and/or negatively impacting the reputation of the Digital Lab, BC Children s Hospital, and/or UBC.

Supervision Received

This position reports directly to the Head of the Digital Lab, but works with autonomy and independence in meeting objectives defined for the Engineering Team.

Supervises engineering staff, technicians, and students - number of staff may differ based on active projects and partnership opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science.Graduate degree in a relevant Engineering or Applied Science discipline (e.g. Biomedical, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical); PhD preparation would be considered a significant asset.A minimum of 5 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.*

Extensive knowledge of Computer-Aided Design & Manufacturing (CAD-CAM) based applications. In-depth knowledge of CAD software; some project management training, background in heat transfer, stress and fluid flow; familiarity with industrial solidification technologies; and familiarity with computer usage (Windows, OSX, Linux) are required. The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills; and experience in working on collaborative projects with industry. Related experience with computer/peripheral maintenance and repair, printer servicing or similar background. Self-starter with the ability to take initiative and accomplish tasks. Excellent problem definition and resolution skills. Ability to multi-task, prioritize, organize and manage tasks. Adaptable and flexible. Ability to transfer technical knowledge to others using a variety of tools and techniques. Track record of collaboration with medical technology start-ups to drive innovation, experience with Materialise Mimics software, experience with relevant 3D model file types and DICOM, ability to incorporate images of patient-specific 3D models into PACS, and experience in grant writing are assets.
