Shifts: 7pm-7am, part-time or PRN nights

Summary of Primary Function

The OB scrub technician has duties related to scrubbing and assisting with surgeries; and maintaining a sterile field according to specific guidelines.  The technician may also be assigned to the care and comfort of patients according to the specific needs of the unit, and according to the technician’s knowledge, abilities, and skills. 

               

Essential Functions -

Scrubbing:

Performs pre-procedure hand and arm scrub according to policy. Prepares procedure according to standards and surgeon’s preference card.  Establishes sterile field utilizing proper aseptic technique.  Demonstrates proper technique in draping.  Demonstrates proper use of instruments, equipment, suturing and stapling devices.  Accurately and appropriately performs sharps, sponge and instrument counts according to AORN standards and hospital policy. 

Therapeutic Care:

A. Provides safe, therapeutic care, considering the age, growth and development, and specific needs of the patient population serviced.

B. Performs therapeutic measures and procedures to patients including such tasks as:

1) takes and records vital signs (reports abnormalities to the nurse):

a. temperature, pulse, and respirations. b. measures and records blood pressure.

B. Provides for the physical care of assigned patients by Registered Nurse including but not limited to a. toileting, b. showering, c. and linen changes.

Clerical Responsibilities:

A. Assists with the preparation of form and information required for admission, discharges and/or transfers of patients.

1) Assembles medical record,

2) Copies charts for transfers.

B. Prepares and maintains records as requested by the Nurse Manager. 

C. Records messages and distributes to appropriate persons.

D. Obtains supplies as needed. 

Miscellaneous: Assisting with vaginal deliveries.

A. The set up and tear down of vaginal delivery tables,

B. performing sharp, sponge and instrument count,

C. provides support and comfort to patients as needed during delivery process,

D. assists physician with vaginal repair as needed. 

Education Qualifications -

Required Minimum Education: Associates degree.

Licensing/ Certification -

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (preferred)
  • Registered Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) with the Virginia Board of Medicine (required if currently reside in Virginia)
