The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) seeks a full-time Associate Fire Protection Inspector, Level III, in the Bureau of Legal Affairs/Code Development Unit, reporting to the Director of Code Implementation. The successful candidate will: represent the Fire Department in NYC Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) proceedings, including attending all BSA public hearings and review sessions; review all BSA applications, including data entry of pertinent information; conduct research of NYC Construction Codes, Fire Code and Zoning Resolution requirements, and other laws, rules, regulations and standards applicable to BSA proceedings; conduct factual research as to Fire Department permits, inspections and other regulatory activities with respect to the premises in question; advise relevant unis in the Bureau of Fire Prevention and the Bureau of Operations of BSA proceedings affecting their operations, and consult with them as to an appropriate Fire Department response; conduct or coordinate site inspections to determine whether site conditions are as represented, fire safety concerns exist, or compliance with code requirements has been obtained; coordinate enforcement action; prepare and commence BSA applications as warranted; notify, consult, and coordinate with other City agencies, including the NYC Department of Buildings; develop protocols for distribution of BSA resolutions to field units and incorporate BSA fire safety requirements into Fire Department code enforcement efforts; draft memoranda, recommendations, correspondence and other documents; prepare and submit Appeals applications and all supportive documents (statement of facts, photographs and sketches or plans) to modify current certificates of occupancy, and participate in the code development process alongside members of the Code Development Unit.
1. Five (5) years of full-time experience in or more of the following:
a. the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables;
b. the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials;
c. the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored or houses to detect potential fire and explosion hazards;
d. the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years.
License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York.
