The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is comprised of 2,000 employees and with an annual operating budget of over $1 billion is one of the largest organizations of its kind committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City. Collaborating with other public agencies and not-for-profit partners, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduces street homelessness, and assists New Yorkers to transition from shelter into appropriate permanent housing. DHS is responsible for the management of over 200 facilities, which mainly are individual, and family shelters used as overnight residences for over 38,000 adults and children. DHS’s portfolio covers approximately 4M square feet.
The Division of Shelter Operations oversees the day-to-day operations of the agency’s Single Adult, Adulty Families and Families with Children shelter systems, both directly run and contracted providers. The work done in this Division centers on the re-housing of all shelter populations and the implementation of programming/shelter initiatives. This Division is responsible for making sure that services to the City’s most vulnerable population are delivered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and throughout the five boroughs.
The Department of Homeless Services is recruiting for one (1) Community Assistant who will:
- Perform general housekeeping duties to maintain agency and regulatory standards for health and sanitation and perform other routine tasks as it relates to the provision of client services.
- Maintain clean restrooms, dorms, laundry rooms, common areas, outside perimeters, office space and other work areas, including the kitchen and cafeteria. Remove and dispose litter and garbage, distribute and replenish toiletries and exchange linen.
- Load and unload deliveries, stock supplies, maintain inventory records. Transport household supplies, equipment, and client lockers, distribute client mail, remove, and store client belongings and provide client escort service. Organize the serving areas and participate in food service.
- Assist in monitoring client program activities, monitor client crowd control, and perform other job-related duties as required.

Hours/Schedule: 8am-4PM Sunday to Thursday
1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position. However, the ability to understand and carry out simple instructions is required.
