Job Description

*ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT FULL-TIME ANNUALLY PAID PARKS EMPLOYEES*

NYC Parks is launching a new citywide team within Maintenance & Operations (M&O) to tackle rodent issues in street tree beds across all five boroughs. This dedicated team will include a Park Supervisor 2 (PS2), Senior Forester (SF), Project Development Coordinator (PDC), four Exterminators, and four City Parks Workers (CPWs). The necessary vehicles, equipment and supplies will be provided to support their efforts.

Major Responsibilities
- Reporting to a Park Supervisor 2 or Program Manager, provide arboricultural expertise in support of the Tree Bed Rodent Mitigation Unit’s citywide goals and objectives.
- Understand rodent mitigation methods employed by the unit, including their effectiveness and impact on trees, to support the elimination of rodent activity in tree beds while optimizing tree health. Train team members on fundamental arboricultural concepts.
- Research new materials and methods related to urban forestry and rodent mitigation near trees. Collaborate with colleagues in the unit, Maintenance & Operations (M&O), and Environment & Planning (E&P) to develop best practices, policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Conduct tree condition assessments and coordinate with Environment & Planning to schedule necessary tree work.
- Utilize forestry and rodent mitigation tracking systems such as the Parks Forestry Management System (ForMS) and other related applications.
- Coordinate rodent mitigation efforts with other city agencies, including but not limited to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), Department of Education (DOE), NYC Public Schools, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), Department of Sanitation (DSNY), and the Mayor’s Office.
- Respond to public inquiries and maintain relationships with officials, community boards, and organizations both within and outside the Agency. Collaborate with the Parks Stewardship team on community tree and tree bed care initiatives.
- Oversee professional forestry operations, including pruning, tree planting, tree removal, sidewalk repair, invasive plant removal, stump removal, disease mitigation, contract management, tree inspections, emergency storm response, project review, permitting and tree preservation measures in streets and parks.
- Train and supervise foresters and staff involved in all aspects of urban forestry, including field surveys, inspections, tree condition assessments, contract preparation and management, consultant oversight, plant material selection, data entry and storm emergency response.
- Review site plans and designs for private and interagency construction projects, ensuring appropriate tree and plant selection, installation methods and tree protection measures.
- Collaborate across all agency divisions to develop and implement programs and policies related to urban forestry and rodent mitigation.
- Prepare briefings, reports, evaluations, budgets and correspondence related to assigned responsibilities.

Qualifications

1. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject, or;

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject and one year of full-time professional experience in forestry or arboricultural work or;

3. An associate degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject and three (3) years of full-time professional experience in forestry or arboricultural work or;
4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1",”2", or “3" above. However, all candidates must have at least an associate degree with a specialization in forestry or a related subject.

License Requirement

A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment."
