DevOps Engineer I

Purpose of Onyx

The Onyx Research Data Tech organization is GSK’s Research data ecosystem which has the capability to bring together, analyze, and power the exploration of data at scale. We partner with scientists across GSK to define and understand their challenges and develop tailored solutions that meet their needs. The goal is to ensure scientists have the right data and insights when they need it to give them a better starting point for and accelerate medical discovery. Ultimately, this helps us get ahead of disease in more predictive and powerful ways.

Onyx is a full-stack shop consisting of product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and DevOps, data / metadata / knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all geared toward:​

  • Building a next-generation, metadata- and automation-driven data experience for GSK’s scientists, engineers, and decision-makers, increasing productivity and reducing time spent on “data mechanics”​

  • Providing best-in-class AI/ML and data analysis environments to accelerate our predictive capabilities and attract top-tier talent​

  • Aggressively engineering our data at scale, as one unified asset, to unlock the value of our unique collection of data and predictions in real-time​

A DevOps Engineer I is a technical contributor who enjoys solving complex problems as part of a collaborative and agile team. We are seeking engineers who are passionate about technology and learning, as well as supporting DevOps tooling to enable other engineering teams to operate with a DevOps ethos. As a DevOps Engineer in Onyx, you will be part of a team that is driving change at GSK.

  Key responsibilities for the DevOps Engineer I include:

  • Work within a multi-disciplined engineering team to empower other platform and engineering teams by delivering essential capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to develop new features and capabilities for services.
  • Propose, define, and implement good engineering practices across the organization.
  • Identify and develop improvements in monitoring/alerting, reliability, performance, and automation, including automated solutions and integrations for self-service flows.
  • Write, review, and maintain code in JavaScript/TypeScript (Node), golang, and python.
  • Continuously learn and provide technology trend recommendations through RFCs.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 2+ years experience with professional software engineering experience

  • 1+ year of cloud experience (GCP, Azure, AWS)

  • 1+ year of experience with build and deployment tools (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins, Azure DevOps)

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Three or more years of cloud experience with GCP

  • Experience working in an Agile delivery team

  • Experience with system design

  • Experience with container tooling (Docker, Kubernetes, helm)

The annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges from $0 to $0 taking into account a number of factors including work location within the US market, the candidate’s skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
