Job Description

This is an on-call casual position responsible for responding to disasters in support of state and federal government efforts. The Registered Nurse may be deployed for periods ranging from 14 to 120 days to areas impacted by significant disasters across the United States and its territories. Compensation rates will vary depending on the specific disaster and location. 

The Registered Nurse will assume responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating direct and indirect clinical care to patients.  They competently function as members of the interdisciplinary team to provide patient and community centered care.  The Registered Nurse serves as an advocate for the patient and their family and intercedes on their behalf by acting as a liaison respecting their rights and beliefs. The Registered Nurse will utilize their expertise of evidenced based medical practice to manage unexpected and emergent situations, to mitigate and treat a variety of injuries and illnesses in a prompt and professional manner.   

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist medical providers with medical procedures and treatments as allowed within licensed scope of work.  
  • Proactively and independently administer basic and urgent/emergent care, including but not limited to inserting catheters with blood specimen collection, urine collection and EKG’s, visual acuity, basic wound care, changing bandages or administering intravenous medications. 
  • Assess and document patient’s vital signs, chief complaint, medical history, prescribed medications.  
  • Establish observable and documentable patient goals using care plans.   
  • Report all changes in patient’s conditions to the medical provider.  
  • Assist patients with basic care and activities of daily living, as needed.  
  • Provide support and education to help patients make responsible health decisions. 
  • Maintains supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies.  
  • Restock clinical and provider areas once supplies are received.  
  • On-call rotation schedule participation as needed.  
  • Accountable for maintaining and improving own physician knowledge and skill competence.  
  • Provides patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients.   
  • Supports the International SOS philosophy, objectives and goals, organization mission and vision.  
  • Respects and supports patient rights.  
  • Fosters constructive relationships as a team member within assigned department and with the members of other departments.  
  • Maintains professional conduct.  
  • Supports and enforces infection control policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements/Certifications: 

  • Current, full, active and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. 
  • National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to obtain a nursing license. 
  • Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience in the past three years caring for patients. 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. 
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). 
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). 
  • Emergency or Urgent Care experience preferred. 
  • Experience working with US military healthcare regulations and standards of care preferred.   
  • Experience working in austere environments preferred. 
  • Accuracy and attention to detail. 
  • Excellent communication skills.  

Education Required: 

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program. 

Physical Demands:  

  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.  
  • Will involve assisting in the lifting and moving of patients for litters, wheelchairs, and beds.   
  • Performing CPR  
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 35 lbs.  
  • Exposure to tropical heat and weather conditions during duration of deployment.   

Other Special Qualifications: 

  • US Citizen. 
  • Live near a major airport.  
  • Be able to respond to site within 72 hours. 
  • Clear a Child Neglect and Abuse Check and other background requirements.   

Additional Information

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
