Henry Holt & Company is looking for a designer to join our cover design team! You will work with the creative director to design book jackets and mechanicals and help manage the Art Department.

What you'll do:

  • Design book jackets and covers for a wide array of fiction and non-fiction titles.
  • Design, route, and update jacket and cover mechanicals.
  • Prepare jacket files for press. This includes: color correcting imagery; setting up effects plates for jackets and covers; color proofing.
  • Work with freelancers, including designers, illustrators, photographers and letterers.
  • Assist in invoicing, contracts, and rights clearance.
  • Follow and help maintain on-time schedules.Bring your unique voice and design sensibility to Henry Holt & Company to help keep our jackets and covers leading the industry!

What you'll bring:

  • A strong design skillset, including proficiency in typography, image creation and manipulation, and image research / photo editing.
  • The ability to work in various genres and aesthetics.
  • Experience creating book jacket mechanicals.
  • The ability to create handlettering and/or illustration is a plus, but not a requirement.
  • Proficiency in Adobe CC, especially InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of and an interest in the book publishing industry, especially as it relates to book jackets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player who is motivated to learn from colleaguesA passion for design and reading

Ideal Experience:

  • 1-3 years of design experience at a book publisher, or other print media (magazine, newspaper, etc.) Candidates who have interned at a publishing house would also be considered.

This role will have an annual salary of $59,000 - $68,000.
