A Day in the Life

Seeking a human factors engineer with global experience submitting class 3 devices to regulatory bodies. You will coach a team of other human factors engineers as we prepare for submission of a next generation medical device system.

We are currently looking for a Principal Human Factors Design Engineer to join our Human Factors and User Experience team. The Pelvic Health Operating unit specializes in providing innovative solutions for patients suffering from overactive bladder, non-obstructive urinary retention and fecal incontinence with sacral neuromodulation and percutaneous tibial neuromodulation. This position can be remote from anywhere within the United States or work a hybrid schedule with 3 days onsite at our Fridley, Minnesota location.

As a Principal Human Factors Design Engineer in the Pelvic Health operating unit, you will have primary responsibility for validation of our next generation system. You will coach fellow human factors engineers on best practices, and work closely with marketing, engineers, and clinical to ensure a user centric approach is used in defining and developing our future product portfolio. You will collaborate with quality and regulatory to create usability documentation required for regulatory submissions across the globe. This is a dynamic opportunity where you will act as a technical leader within a matrix organization to support the definition, design, development, and usability of complex medical device systems.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: 

  • Apply human centered principles, methodologies, and technologies to the design of human-machine systems and products
  • Develop and implement research methodologies and both qualitative and quantitative analysis plans to test and evaluate new concepts and developmental prototypes used in all phases of products development and processes.
  • Design and execute tests to simulate product use for the purposes of user need investigation, concept exploration/selection/refinement, requirements development, use-related risk identification and formal usability validation with intended users with design engineers to establish system design, operating, and training requirements and to ensure optimized human-machine interfaces and overall user experience.
  • Identify and analyze technological problems or risks, perform theoretical human factors investigations, and develop and implement research and analysis plans to inform the design direction of new product development.
  • Coach fellow human factors engineers on best practices in the industry
  • Ensure the organization tracks changing expectations in the global regulatory landscape
  • Collaborate across Medtronic and the Industry to improve practices within the organization
  • 25% or less domestic travel


Must Have: Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, please ensure the minimum requirements are evident in your applicant profile and on your resume. 

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or advanced degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have: Preferred Qualifications 

  • Strong understanding of usability standards (IEC 62366, ANSI HE75, FDA Human Factors Guidance) and a network of external partners in human factors
  • Experience designing and validating class III medical devices
  • Experience working with devices involving both software and hardware preferred
  • Experience working with patient systems
  • Experience leading human factors teams working on complex development programs
  • Certified Human Factors Specialist (CHFS)

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$137,600.00 - $206,400.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).

 

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to all regular employees: Incentive plans, 401(k) plan plus employer contribution and match, Short-term disability, Paid time off, Paid holidays, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Non-qualified Retirement Plan Supplement (subject to IRS earning minimums), and Capital Accumulation Plan (available to Vice Presidents and above, or subject to IRS earning minimums).

 

Regular employees are those who are not temporary, such as interns.  Temporary employees are eligible for paid sick time, as required under applicable state law, and the Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Please note some of the above benefits may not apply to workers in Puerto Rico.
