Serious Eats is seeking a food-loving and detail-oriented Visuals Editor to join our team. We combine rigorous research, culinary curiosity, and creativity to produce engaging, evidence-based food articles, recipes, and more. The visuals editor’s primary focus is creating, assigning, and editing visual content for Serious Eats’ platforms as well as working with the editorial team on other editorial tasks and operations.
This is primarily an editing position but there will be opportunities and expectations for the person in this role to shoot original content in a studio setting. Candidates with both on-set and editorial post-production experience are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, deeply curious, has a strong eye for design and composition, an eagerness to learn, a talent for photo research, and a passion for food and visual storytelling. We are looking for someone who can continuously generate new, fun, and exciting visual ideas across a range of content types and editorial initiatives.
The position reports to the Associate Visuals Director.
Hybrid 3x a week- (New York)
In-office Expectations: This position is hybrid in-office, with the ability to work remotely for up to 2 days per week.
About The Positions Contributions:

Assist Associate Visuals Director with all aspects of digital photo production for Serious Eats.
Write photo briefs, paying close attention to recipe details and styling guidance.
Edit, resize, crop, and process photo submissions for the website and social, maintaining brand standards and retouching images as needed.
Create graphics and composites for articles based on editorial requests.
30%: Work within the CMS and DAM systems to maintain archive integrity, establishing systems for data tracking. Alongside the Associate Visuals Director, work with cross-functional teams, such as editorial, product, and sales to further the visual voice and identity of Serious Eats, helping to execute large-scale projects and tentpoles.
30%: Procure, edit, and optimize visual content, including photography, illustration, and templates, that aligns with best practices, voice, and visual identity. Work with new and established freelance photographers in all stages from onboarding and assigning to editing and publication.
20%: Assist in ideation and creation of social-first content. Occasionally shoot recipes with the guidance of the associate visuals director.
20%: Assist in pre-production needs, on-set requests, and general help with in-house shoot days. Assist in social video production as well as creative briefs for larger video projects. Pitch visual ideas, treatments, and original content for the site.
The Role’s Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements:
Education:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
Experience:
3+ years of experience in photography or visual content production, ideally in an editorial setting, food media, or a related field.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, Certifications and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Programs, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, Camera Raw, and Bridge. Experience with or willingness to learn Premiere Pro and After Effects.
On-set photo experience in a studio setting as a photographer.
Familiarity with studio production, studio lighting, pre-production, and post-production workflows.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational and project management skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
Ability to write and edit creative briefs that provide visual direction to freelance talent.
Experience editing images for web, social media, and print with an aptitude for conceptualizing and executing scroll-stopping visuals.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Passionate about food and visual storytelling with an eagerness to learn, experiment with new techniques, and bring innovative ideas to the table.

Pay Range
Salary: New York: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00The pay range above represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position and may change in the future. Actual pay may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Dotdash Meredith’s total compensation package for employees. Other compensation may include annual bonuses, and short- and long-term incentives.
