Job Description

Smiths Detection is seeking a highly motivated 2025 Summer Intern to join our Manufacturing Engineering team. As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you will gain hands-on experience working with cutting-edge technologies in a dynamic and collaborative environment. As a Smiths Detection intern, you will have the opportunity to experience, first-hand, the type of work we do within Smiths Detection. As an intern, you can make an impact on the business as well as continue to build your analytical, technical and leadership skills.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

The selected intern will working with a Mentor Mfg. Eng. (or Supervisor) and will:

  • Provide engineering support to Production via development of processes, troubleshooting products, etc.
  • Assess current processes for purpose of identifying wastes.
  • Work in cross-functional teams to drive change and improvement to processes related to safety, quality, cost, and serviceability.
  • Provide support in creating / modifying procedures, processes, and specifications.
  • Support MRB and Quality and perform root-cause analysis for defects, internal and supplier oriented. Goal is scrap reduction.
  • Design and document fixtures and tooling for Production in support of process and yield improvements and EHS issues.

Qualifications

Education: Degree-track undergraduate or graduate student in an Engineering discipline – preferably Manufacturing, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering.

Experience: Basic understanding of engineering principles required. Experience using 3D design software (SolidWorks preferred). Knowledge of contemporary lean principles also preferred.

Knowledge skills/other attributes:

  • Ability to work in matrixed environment with different profession types (i.e. engineers, software developers, project mangers, etc.)
  • A passion to promote the Health and Safety of self and others and minimize impacts to our environment
  • Sound communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Inquisitiveness and a desire to learn and apply new-found knowledge
  • Ability to conceptualize products as holistic systems
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities
  • Technical writing skills with expertise
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office software suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • US Citizen preferred; ability to pass a background check and security vetting required

The compensation for this position ranges from $15.00 - $35.00/hr and will vary depending on factors including level of school completed and type of position requirements for skills, whether technical or non-technical.  We are committed to ensuring our interns are fairly compensated for their valuable contributions.
