JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant will provide clinical support, assist with administrative tasks, and provide general support under direct supervision of a licensed medical practitioner or designee in accordance with UVA Health policies and procedures and competency to promote patient health and wellness.
This position requires providing service to all age populations in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual served.
Patient Care: Responsible for practicing safely within the defined standards of practice.
Records and relays patient information, symptoms, and concerns to the patient’s medical provider or registered nurse for further triage assessment and to determine a plan of care
Completes standardized rooming and performs clinical intake, health data collection, and documentation.
Performs tasks according to scope of practice, documented competencies, and as directed by a medical practitioner or nurse.
Implements age-appropriate interventions based on individual patient needs as directed by the patient’s medical provider.
Reinforces patient/family teaching plan based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient through approved educational materials or written instructions
Communication: Communicates effectively and professionally with all members of the interdisciplinary team, patients, medical providers and all levels of healthcare.
Conveys information accurately to physicians, nurses, and other team members, as well as listen and respond to the needs and concerns of patients and colleagues
Utilizes appropriate communication tools such as Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation, and Question (SBARQ) when communicating within the interdisciplinary team.
Documents appropriate information in a timely manner.
Teamwork: Willing to share responsibilities, support their teammates, and work together to achieve common goals.
Organizes and prioritizes daily work assignments to support patient needs, the interdisciplinary team, and operational efficiency.
Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care. Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues.
Technical Competence: Uses knowledge and skills acquired through training and validation through competency testing.
Provides clinical support to include but are not limited to preparing laboratory specimens, performing point of care testing, ECG/EKG, spirometry, venipuncture/phlebotomy, specimen collection, cleaning and sterilization of instruments/equipment and rooms, disposing of contaminated supplies, assisting with procedures/examinations, and administering oral, intradermal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications.
Documents and capture charges for clinical support services rendered within the patient visit.
Performs administrative support responsibilities as directed by a Clinic Leader. Administrative support includes but are not limited to drafting letters and/or assisting with completion of forms, facilitating scheduling, pending medication refills, assisting with coverage of in basket messaging, and clinic/chart prep
The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or GED Required.
Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in a medical office setting preferred.
Licensure: Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) credentials or must be obtained within 6 months of date of hire through a recognized national professional association such as:
AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants)
AMT (American Medical Technologists)
ARMA (American Registry of Medical Assistants)
NAHP (The National Association of Healthcare Professions)
NHA (National Healthcare Association)
Additional Skills/Requirements Required : BLS required. Ability to successfully complete general and department role based specific skills validation and competency testing.
