Job Description

This role reports to the SVP of Product Reliability Engineering and is responsible for leading the Payment Products Reliability Engineering vertical, overseeing a team of 150+ engineers. As a Vice President, Product Reliability Engineering you will apply your leadership skills and knowledge of infrastructure and software development to drive ultra-scalable and highly reliable services for Visa’s payment products and services.

 

Product Reliability Engineering (PRE) holds the responsibility for the big picture: determining how our systems relate to each other and using a breadth of tools and approaches to solve a broad spectrum of problems. Practices, such as limiting time spent on operations, blameless postmortems, and proactive identification of potential outages, factor into the iterative improvement key to both product quality and interesting, dynamic day-to-day work. As these systems, services, and products have thrived, we are now having to think about scaling to better serve our internal and external customers while maintaining the reliability our users expect. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of approximately 150 located across the globe ensuring they provide top-tier reliability engineering
  • Lead Reliability Engineering teams to provide standardized, secure, and highly available platform services for Visa’s products to achieve availability targets of 6 9s. 
  • Provide 24x7 operational support working closely with global operations and product reliability engineering teams 
  • Lead the transformation of DB/Middleware technologies to build End to End Observability and Proactive/Predictive Operations at Scale for faster resolution and reduce toil 
  • Manage, innovate, and create programs, new software, analytics that drive improvements to the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of Visa’s products and services. 
  • Work cross-functionally in close partnership with product group leads from technologies up and down Visa's very tall and deep stack to guide product engineering to build fast, reliable, and durable production systems. 
  • Develop strategic directions, workforce plans, and organizational structure for the reliability teams within each product group. 
  • Be a key strategic leader of Visa’s Product Reliability Engineering organization.  
  • Regularly produce key performance metrics to management and product partners 
    • Resources consumed on a per service basis 
    • SLAs of uptime for the enterprise platform services and KPI related to that 
    • Incident tracking, RCA review and meeting related SLAs for service escalations.  Goals to track and reduce them over time 
    • Dashboards and analytics for service-related statistics and operations 

 

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.

Travel Requirements: This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.

Mental/Physical Requirements: This position will be performed in an office setting.  The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
• 12 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 10 years of experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters/ MBA/JD/MD) or at least 8 years of work experience with a PhD Masters/MBA/JD/MD) or 8 years relevant work experience with a PhD

• 5 years of experience with software development (e.g., algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis) and/or systems design (e.g., Unix/Linux, IP networking, performance/reliability).

Preferred Qualifications
• 15 years of experience managing a team and experience managing multiple cross-functional projects.
• Industry leadership experience in a reliability function for products at scale.
• Experience with mainframe systems handling payment processing applications globally.
• Experience with microservices frameworks and containers including development of container-based messaging, queuing and caching services
• Knowledge and experience of Generative AI based pair programming techniques to enhance coding and testing quality, timeline, efficiency and effectiveness.
• Experience with one or more database technologies such as MSSQL, DB2 or Oracle including building, deploying, and operating large database management systems
• Experience with building multi-tenant, scalable, and highly available services for caching, scheduling or messaging like public cloud platforms
• Ability to take ownership of complex, multi-faceted, open-ended problems and drive them to completion
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, grow, retain, and lead high-caliber technical talent
• Multi-tasking ability essential to handle multiple priorities with minimal direction from management and adjust to changing priorities and requirements in a rapidly growing organization
• Strong leadership and people management skills, with demonstrated ability to lead global, multi-functional teams.
• Strong track record of building large scale distributed enterprise systems with focus on security, reliability, scalability, and performance
• Payments industry experience desired

Additional Qualifications
• Domain knowledge and expertise in commerce and payment systems and platforms
• Experience with compliance requirements including PCI, SOX, SSAE/ISAE requirements
• Experience with regulatory standard including FFIEC/FBA, BOE

U.S. APPLICANTS ONLY: The estimated salary range for a new hire into this position is 210,200 to 347,650 USD per year, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for bonus and equity. Visa has a comprehensive benefits package for which this position may be eligible that includes Medical, Dental, Vision, 401 (k), FSA/HSA, Life Insurance, Paid Time Off, and Wellness Program.
